For the second assignment, we were tasked to improve the illuminance of a 6x10m space of a building of our choice for better work productivity and visual comfort for the users.
This challenges us to understand the principle of artificial lighting design by applying the Lumen Method calculation and use appropriate ambient, task and accent light to illuminate certain parts of the space.
We chose a meeting/ conference room which was underused because of the bad sun and artificial lighting inside. We decided to increase the general luminance of the room with brighter ambient lights, whilst adding a row of task lamps above the control tables for better visibility when the ambient lights are dimmed for presentations.
For me, the most challenging part of the project was the preparation stage as we needed to collect a lot of site-specific statistic. It was the most time-consuming part of the assignment while we decide on the space and gather the data required (lux, light luminance, room index). After that, the finalising and designing aspect went swimmingly as it was similar to the last project and the outcome was better than expected.
