read&write is a commercial extension created by TextHelp to provide students with technological supports in literacy. r&w is free to install for all users but certain tools are only available for premium users who subscribe to use the tool on an annual basis (after a 30 day free trial period). The extension is free for teachers to use on an individual basis. Please note that only the Microsoft Edge has incorporated extension functionality into its browser. Internet Explorer does not support the use of extensions. Windows 7 users may not natively install Microsoft Edge onto their computers without using a workaround so at the moment.
As the name suggests, read&write provides supports in two distinct areas: reading and writing. In addition, there are also tools designed to support students with research. The extension is really a collection of tools that are easily accessed through one of three tool bars which appear depending on the activity that is being conducted. These three tool bars are accessed through research/web browsing, writing while using Word Online, or while viewing a PDF using the read&write PDF viewer. Each toolbar will display the appropriate tools that are available for that usage. The various tools and ways to access them are listed below.
