This opens up the Preferences window pane which allows users to completely personalize their experience while using the r&w software. Users should spend considerable time initially to explore all of the options in the Preferences pane and to set up the software correctly. Once configured, the user should not need to access the preferences pane again unless they have changed the way that they interact with the software. It may also be possible to access the Preferences pane by clicking on the Settings icon within the r&w toolbar.
The r&w preferences pane is the area where many of the features within the software suite can be configured and comprises of areas that are listed on the left hand pane. Each section will be listed in further detail in the Preferences (Settings) section.
It is possible to reset preferences to default by clicking the restore to default button in each section. The absence of the button indicates that that section is already using the default setting.
Appearance
This section allows customization of font size as well as use of colouring that is used within the software. Options include changing the colour of the word and/or sentence that is currently being read, spelling errors as well as words that may be similar in spelling to other words.
Customize Toolbar
This section relates to the appearance of the toolbar including icon size, presence of text descriptors, colour scheme, but most importantly, which tools are visible in the r&w toolbar allowing easy access to frequently used tools and removal of tools that are not required.
The dictionary is an area where customized words can be added along with their custom definitions. This may be particularly useful for subjects where technical terms are used. There is a toggle to use the web dictionary instead which will pull definitions of words from the internet (connection required).
This section allows users to select the web engine that will be used to research selected text. Unfortunately, there are only three options available and additional search engines cannot be manually added.
This section controls the behaviour of the word prediction tools. By default, three word banks have been selected: Essential, Additional and Advanced. Depending on the writing ability of the user, one or more of these may need to be turned off. Additional word banks can be added manually. The Learn As I Type feature incorporates words that are commonly used.
Further configuration of the Screen Masking tool is possible in this section including changing the color and opaqueness of the masking as well as the colour and behaviour of the mouse pointer while Screen Masking is utilized.
Screenshot reader behaviour can be configured in this section including the way that the text is highlighted. If outline highlighting is desired, the weight of the outline can be specified. Users can opt to have the word contained within an image to be exported to word.
Similar Word Checker
There is the ability to add words not currently captured in the similar word checker tool. In the example shown to the left, the word “Primer” has been added along with the similar sounding word, “Primmer”. Words that have been ignored previously can be removed in this setting as well.
Speech
The speech settings pane configures the way that text is spoken. While reading text, the user can opt to have individual words, sentences or paragraphs read. The program can also read while sentences are being composed and users an specify whether the program will read back individual letters, words or sentences. Words that are mispronounced can be individually configured so that they are read properly.
Spelling
There are options to enter custom words that may not be recognized by the spell check. In the example to the left, the word bannock is added so that it will not be flagged as a spelling error. For words where it may be difficult to find a suggested replacement for a misspelled word, you can add a phonetic replacement for the word.
Check it
This section allows the user to change the way that the Check it tool behaves. There is the option to hover over a suggestion to hear the pronounciation of the word. There is also the ability to order suggested words based on context. Finally, this is another area where customized words can be added.
General
This section is used primarily to determine how often the software should check for updates and whether the updates should be applied automatically. These settings may require administrative permissions.
Mode refers to the type of activity that r&w is being used for. Selecting a specific mode will customize the r&w toolbar with preset tools that are typically associated with that activity. Each of the modes and their associated toolbars as shown in the image. Using the mode feature can be a convenient way of removing icons that are not relevant to the activity.

The last mode option is called User Defined and this is a customizable toolbar that the user can configure in the settings for their needs. Note that if a toolbar is too large to fit on one line, the toolbar will only display as many icons that fit on one line. At the end of the line, a pull down menu will be represented by a downward facing arrow which when clicked, will reveal the rest of the tools.
The View option toggles the toolbar between visible or hidden.
The Docking option configures where the toolbar will rest: the top of the screen or on the left or right edges.
Basic commands to control reading playback can also be found within the Texthelp icon.
Additional resources can be found in the Help menu which includes links to the Texthelp website and Videos (internet connection required for both).
