The versatility of an iPad is directly related to the number of Apps that are available for the device which add functionality to the device. There are literally millions of Apps available for the iPad.* Apps are loaded onto a device through the App Store. They can then be sorted and organized in a variety of ways. See the App Management page for more details.
* As of January 2017, there were more than 2.2 million Apps in the App Store. Not all Apps are available for all devices. Some Apps are specific to an iPhone, iPod or an iPad. Some Apps are also specific to the operating system that the device is running. For example, Apps that are regularly updated will only load if the newest iOS version is installed (although the last compatible version might be installed instead). Some Apps will not load on the latest iOS because the App developer has not updated it. In these situations, the user will have to use a device with an older iOS version before these Apps can be used.

No one App can do it all. However, multiple Apps can be combined to build on the product of another App. This is what is commonly referred to as App Smashing. For example, a photo is taken with the Camera App. That photo is edited in Photos. Then it is imported into Stop Motion along with other photos to create a Stop Motion movie. That movie is then imported into iMovie to be refined. What started off as photos in the Camera App became something much more but it took several Apps to get it there.
