This tutorial is based on the web license of Kurzweil 3000 version 16. Although the functionality of Kurzweil does not change based on the licensing, there are some significant changes in how it may be used.
Launching the program will differ depending on the licensing.
For standalone licenses, this will simply involve launching the program from the Docking Bar or through the Applications window. As the serial number was added during the installation, no other authentication needs to happen. The standalone version differs from the other versions in that no network connection is required.
Similarly, the network license also does not require manual authentication. During the program launch, the program will authenticate against the license that is stored on the network server. However, this does mean that the computer that is being used must be connected to the institution's network (even if internet connectivity is turned off).
Finally, the web license version of Kurzweil is authenticated through a sign in on the Kurzweil web portal. Each user creates an individual username along with a password that is used to gain access to the program. This is the same whether the user is accessing Kurzweil through the web or using the desktop software. When the program is launched, users will be presented with a screen similar to that shown below.
Once logged in for the first time, you will be presented with the several windows some of which may open behind other windows. This is one of the major differences between Kurzweil for Mac and Kurzweil for PC in the graphical representation of accessing different tools. The windows that open include:
Tip screen (can be disabled so that it doesn't show at startup)
Kurzweil 3000 Reader controller - simple remote that controls the voice reading tool
Welcome Document - an introductory document that opens by default.
Starting Points toolbar - Quick Access toolbar to 1) create new document 2) open existing document 3) scan document or 4) read the web
Tools - a collection of tools that is used within the Kurzweil program
The tip screen and the welcome document can be configured to not show upon opening in Preferences under the Kurzweil 3000 option in the Menu bar . All other windows can be closed and opened through the Window option in the Menu bar.
Tools
Starting Points Toolbar
In addition to the various windows described and shown above, Kurzweil's functionality in its various settings and functions are accessed through either the Menu bar or the Tool bar. The Menu bar is a static comprehensive text-based dropdown list of all of the commands contained within Kurzweil. The Menu bar is displayed at the top of the screen which may be hidden if the Kurzweil application window is maximized. Moving the mouse pointer to the top of the screen will reveal the Menu bar if this is the case. In comparison, the toolbar is a collection of tools that are located in a strip above the document window. Unlike the Menu bar, the toolbar can be customized and changed depending on how Kurzweil is being used. Each of these will be explored in greater depth.
