The Kurzweil 3000 menu features tools and settings that apply to the program universally. This might be to display the current version of the installed software, checking for updates, setting preferences, locking features, or configuring the user's Kurzweil 3000 account (web license only).
The first two items are self explanatory. It is worth while to mention that Kurzweil tends to release updates on a monthly basis. For the most part, downloading and installing the latest update is sufficient which is to say that successive updates do not need to be installed.
The preferences tool provides users significant control over how Kurzweil is used and will be discussed in depth below.
The only other notable section of the general tools is the ability to view account preferences and to log out of Kurzweil (to allow another user to log in).
Within the Preferences window, there are seven different tabs which include: General, Highlighters, Notes, Reading, Scanning, Text and Toolbars. Each of these tabs will be described in the Preferences section.
The Lock Features item is a way to prevent users from accessing specific functions within Kurzweil. Simply check the items that will not be available and click the lock icon on the bottom left to prevent further changes. At this point, a popup window will appear prompting for a password to be entered. This is the same password that will be used to disable the Lock Features function.
Once a password has been set, those features will no longer work. The options will either appear greyed out or they will not function. To restore functionality, go back into the Lock Features dialogue through the Kurzweil 3000 tab in the Menu Bar. At this point, you will be prompted to enter the password to proceed. Once the correct password has been entered, the dialogue box will open. At this point, all features will be unlocked and the Lock icon will need to be reinstalled in order to restrict feature usage.
