LIFE AFTER SCHOOL

Since leaving St Pat's, many Patricians have followed an interesting path which is worth telling, even in cases where the story is well known. This section will hopefully expand over time to enable us to include the stories about what others have done throughout their adult life. A separate section of this website ('Notables') is devoted to those deemed to have held particular influence in the wider society or have achieved more than would be expected during their adult life, but are now no longer with us.

This section is intended to raise the awareness of Old Patricians to the interesting life and significant achievements of colleagues who have been our classmates or whom we have known during our time at school.

JULIAN CARR (60-66)

The first of these Old Patrician stories was complied by Bill Dowling and is about Julian Carr (click on the heading; if required, you can download the story from there to transfer to your device).

Julian sends occasional updates on the activities of Fair World International (under his guidance, and with the assistance of many). These can also be read by going to the page accessible by clicking on the heading above.

There have been quite a few Old Patricians who have read of Julian's work and decided to provide his Fair World organization with some specific financial assistance to ensure the completion of some of the projects that will make a real difference to the small Tanzanian communities. His webpage here describes some of the work being done in those villages.

TONY CAVANAGH (60-64)

Not one to rest on his laurels, Bill has also been busy chatting with Tony Cavanagh, having learned of Tony's extensive interests in many aspects of the thoroughbred industry and other areas. The result is a detailed account of what Tony has been doing since leaving St Pat's. The story covers about 10 pages and is followed by many more which show some of his favourite photos of friends he has made across the decades. It makes for great reading.

MARTIN TOBIN (61-66) and HIS PATRICIAN FAMILIES

Bill Dowling has been at work once again, this time bringing together the histories of many Old Patricians associated with one or two family names. The Costigans and the Sullivans are both ancestral families of Martin Tobin, and the three family names are represented at St Pat's in every decade (with the exception of the 20s & 30s) from the 1880s until the closure in 1968. During recent conversations between Bill and Martin, they realized that there was a story about these wider family connections which might be worth contributing to our website.

Their discussions resulted in the drawing together Martin's many personal memories of school and relatives, along with information contained in family histories written elsewhere (and acknowledged in the final piece). Click the heading above to go the Costigan-Sullivan-Tobin page.

TED RULE (60-64) and SOME RECOLLECTIONS ON HIS YEARS SPENT in CHINA

Ted was at St Pat's from 1960 to 1964, finishing his time there in Matric and earning the Dux of the School prize at the end of the year.

He must have browsed through our website on and off during the year, noting the gradually increasing number of 'Life after SPC' contributions that have been appearing over recent months. Perhaps having noticed those, and drawing the conclusion that contributions were welcome (e.g. see the Martin Tobin page), he has decided to add a contribution or two of his own. That wouldn't be a difficult task for someone whose life has been spent doing just that, with contributions and reports being made to many illustrious broadsheets, journals and other publications (not to mention the more official ones to his 'superiors') while filling various diplomatic posts overseas.
