"The Vietnam War (Part 3)" is an episode of MrSpherical, depicting the late stage and the end of the Vietnam War.
In late 1966, the United States is performing the Operation Rolling Thunder, an aerial bombardment campaign against North Vietnam. The US dropped many bombs on North Vietnamese villages and bases, while flying a fighter jet. After the bombing campaign, the US landed the jet in his base, and meets South Vietnam again. South Vietnam mentions the secret plan to launch a ground mission to the Iron Triangle, a territory controlled by North Vietnam. An American news reporter suddenly comes in and interrupts the discussion, asking the current situation of the Vietnam War. The US and South Vietnam are positive to their operations against North Vietnam, and believes that the bombing campaign will cut down the supply lines of North Vietnam. The US mentions his plan to invade the Iron Triangle again, and he is ready to launch the operation.
In 1967, the US army and the South Vietnamese army are performing the mission in the Iron Triangle. While the US is commanding the soldiers, one of the South Vietnamese soldier falls into a trap set by the Viet Cong, resulting in his death. The news reporter appears again, photographing the body of the soldier, and other soldiers in the US army. He mentions the Viet Cong's familiarity with the jungle terrain, and the US tells the soldier to be more careful on the way. The army reaches a nearby small village, with South Vietnamese villagers living in it. The US and South Vietnam warn the villagers about the operation, and then force them to leave the village and move to a new location. The news reporter reports the action as "unnecessary evil", but he is soon kicked out of the place by the US. The army then burns the entire village.
A few days later, the army is still walking in the Iron Triangle. A US soldiers is confused that there are no Viet Cong soldiers found on the way, but soon dies because of another trap. South Vietnam finds a tunnel built by the Viet Cong. The US orders a soldier to enter the tunnel. The soldier walks through the tunnel, but only finds one Viet Cong soldier in the tunnel. He kills him afterwards, then reported the situation to the US. A charger was placed in the tunnel by the US, blowing the tunnel up. On January 26, 1967, the army finished the operation, and comes back to their base with a helicopter. The US claims that the operation is successfully, but he is questioned by a soldier, thinking that most of the Viet Cong avoided them. The news reporter hears the discussion, and interviews the US, who believes that the war will end soon.
Nine months later, North Vietnam, China and the USSR is having a discussion in the planning room. They believe that, the American operations of bombing and burning Vietnamese territories will help the North Vietnam gain more support, since the Vietnamese people will no longer support South Vietnam. North Vietnam also mentions that he is going to launch more attack on South Vietnam. On the other side, the reporter is interviewing a soldier, who talks about his experience in the war, and the reporter is negative to the operations. The US interrupts the interview, and reports that North Vietnam has launched a massive attack along the demilitarized zone. The soldier is ordered to stay in his current position. South Vietnam also comes in and reports about the attack. Soon, the Viet Cong soldiers arrive in the location, starting to attack the US and South Vietnam. During the attack, a South Vietnamese soldier is shot. Soon after, a US helicopter appears and begins to attack the Viet Cong. The Viet Cong soldiers are forced to surrender, with a grenade thrown by the US afterwards. A doctor questions about the war, and thinking that the US is deceiving his own country. At last, the US admits that he has a low chance of winning, and has to end the Vietnam War without announcing his defeat.
