qThe United States of America, commonly referred to as the United States or simply America, is a transcontinental country spanning North America, Asia, and Oceania. He is made up of 50 states and ranks third in both area (behind Canada and the Russian Federation) and population (behind the People's Republic of China and the Republic of India). His neighbors are the United Mexican States and Canada.
British colonization of the Americas began in the 17th century, and Great Britain competed with France, Spain, Portugal, and Russia to gain the most territory in the Americas, resulting in conflicts with the Natives and themselves. By the 18th century, all of the thirteen colonies have been established. Due to clashes with the British over taxation without representation, the Thirteen Colonies fought against the British starting from 1775, and declared their independence in 1776 as the United States of America, albeit with limited recognition. American independence was finally recognized in 1783, when British troops withdrew from American soil and ceded British territory south of the Great Lakes.
In the 19th century, America began westward expansion, leading to conflicts with other nations, in particular the British, the Mexicans, and the Spanish. Following the Confederacy's defeat, they were absorbed back into the Union.

When World War I broke out in 1914, America initially stayed out of the war but eventually joined in 1917. Similarly, when World War II started in 1939, America initially didn't want to get involved, but an attack on Pearl Harbor by the Empire of Japan brought them in. America joined the Allies and helped them defeat the Axis.
Following World War II, tensions between America and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, the two global superpowers, reached an all-time high, starting the Cold War. During this period, alliances were formed, specifically the American-aligned North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the Soviet-aligned Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance, and a lot of proxy conflicts, including in Korea and Vietnam, began. In 1991, the USSR dissolved, ending the Cold War, and America became the world's sole superpower.
In the 21st century, America had to face the increasing threat of terrorism, including from Al-Qaeda, Afghanistan, and Iraq. When Russia, the biggest post-Soviet country, started showing aggression against Ukraine, another post-Soviet country, the United States and NATO started showing support towards Ukraine, giving them military aid after Russia invaded him.
America is known for declaring wars, his obsession with oil and democracy, and wearing sunglasses. He is an important member of many organizations, including G7, G20, NATO, and the United Nations. He has the second-most nuclear weapons in the world, behind Russia.
