After an extended occupation in Afghanistan, the US withdrew their forces from the country in a rushed and unexpected way, leaving behind civilians and allies from all sides. Now, Afghanistan has been taken over by the Talibans, and the future of the country is now uncertain. The implications and consequences of this sudden withdrawal are still being seen day to day, as thousands try to escape the country.

The harrowing tale of how Canada got its (full, legal) independence… by asking nicely. It was a longer process than we depict here: they were initially granted some autonomy in 1867, when Canada included fewer provinces. But after a series of negotiations and declarations in the 1920’s, where Canada basically just asked to be independent… they got it, when the Statute of Westminster was passed by the UK Parliament in 1931. The Statute of Westminster granted independence to several other former British colonies as well. Fun fact: Canada still didn’t have a constitution until 1982!

Despite agreeing to a nonaggression pact in 1939, Hitler eventually pulled the old switcheroo on the USSR, and in 1941 launched an invasion known as Operation Barbarossa. But Hitler under-estimated the Red Army's reserves, as well as the stability of it's government... and, of course, made the classic mistake that everyone makes: don't get caught in a military campaign on Russian soil in the winter! Will the Allies stay Allies?
When World War II ended, the Allies–USA, UK, France, the USSR, and friends–settled in for a little victory party. When they did so, they agreed to split Germany into separate zones of occupation. Berlin, too, was split, even though it was technically in the Soviet zone.

You know what? Apparently, the pipeline system in Ukraine is responsible for transporting almost all the remaining Russian gas exports to Central and Western Europe.
Despite being shelled and bombed by Russian forces daily, Ukraine continues to facilitate this trade, worth over $100 million daily.

In the late 1930s, as Germany was getting ready for BLITZKRIEG, Hitler ordered the construction of an ENORMOUS 80-centimeter railway gun!
It was mainly intended to blast through the Maginot Line, French military fortifications that were the strongest in the world at the time. But by the time it was finished… The Germans had already blasted into France through Belgium, circumventing the Maginot problem.

In the summer of 1940, the German Luftwaffe began a campaign to gain air superiority over the United Kingdom as a prelude to a planned invasion, codenamed Operation Sea Lion (Hitler likes his Sea Lions). The ensuing battle, known as the Battle of Britain, saw the Royal Air Force defend the skies over Britain against the might of the German air force.

In 1886, France generously gifted the United States the iconic Statue of Liberty, which stands tall on Liberty Island in New York Harbor. The statue symbolized friendship and the shared values of freedom and democracy between the two nations. But the starting point of the war was several years earlier, just after World War I, when the victors - Britain, France, USA, etc. - decided with the Treaty of Versailles to punish Germany, whom they saw as starting the war.

But WHY did the Soviet Union make a deal with Germany to split Poland in half? Why didn't the Soviet Union just make a DEAL with Britain, with France, with Poland and other countries?

In the aftermath of World War II, as celebrations filled the air, the United States, the United Nations, and the Soviet Union found themselves grappling with the question of what to do with Korea, which had just been liberated from Japanese occupation. Failing to reach a consensus, they ultimately opted to partition the nation into two distinct regions: the southern part, supported by the USA and the UN, and the northern part, receiving assistance from the USSR.

The attack on Pearl Harbor, which occurred on December 7, 1941, set the stage for a massive power shift in the nature of both World War II, and the world in general. Tired of America's attempts to block Japan's imperial ambitions in Asia, Japan launched a pre-emptive strike in the hopes of disabling the US Navy and giving Japan much needed time to establish dominance in the Asia-Pacific region while the US licked its wounds. Unfortunately, that's not quite how things went down...

As conflicts broke out - between Jewish groups and Arab groups, between Jewish groups and the British, and between Arab groups and the British - the Brits decided they didn't want the territory anymore. So, they let the United Nations decide what to do. Prior to the end of World War I, Jews, Christians, Muslims, and everybody else in Palestine had lived together in peace. But with the British in control, that had fallen apart.

Near the end of World War 2, as the Soviet Red Army pushed the German's back towards Berlin, Polish rebels (known as the Polish Home Army) in the capital, Warsaw, started a last ditch uprising!
They knew that they didn't have any time or options left: if the Soviets took the city they'd install a communist government; or, if they didn't, the German's would raze the city to the ground.

The relationship between the Russian Empire and the U.S. went through some interesting shifts from the American Revolution to World War I. At first, Russia stayed neutral during the Revolution and even backed the U.S. during the War of 1812. Things were pretty friendly in the mid-1800s, especially when Russia sold Alaska to the U.S. in 1867.

Did you guys know the Vietnam War really kicked off after WWII? Vietnam wanted independence from France, but France wasn’t having it. After a big battle in 1954, Vietnam split into communist North and non-communist South. The U.S. stepped in to stop the spread of communism, sending military help, and by the 60s, it escalated into a full-blown war!

Did you guys know the U.S. got pulled into the Vietnam War big time after the Gulf of Tonkin incident in 1964? After that, Congress gave the go-ahead, and by 1965, American combat troops were on the ground!

Did you guys know Operation Rolling Thunder was when the U.S. seriously ramped up its involvement in the Vietnam War? Starting in 1965, they launched massive bombing campaigns against North Vietnam to weaken the enemy’s war effort. It was supposed to last a few months but went on for years! Despite all the bombs, it didn’t really break the North's resolve, and the fighting just kept escalating.

Did you guys know the Vietnam War ended in 1975 when North Vietnam took over Saigon? After years of intense fighting, the U.S. had pulled out by 1973, but the South couldn't hold off the North alone. The fall of Saigon marked the end of the war, and Vietnam was united under communist rule. It was a tough and chaotic finish to one of the longest wars in U.S. history. Crazy, right?
