Breezer14

A Height Adjustable Cooling Duct for SecKit Printers using NEMA14 E steppers

v0.95 (2023/1/17)
Add the variants for a remote blower

Variations & naming convention

To adapt different SecKit printers, extruders and air sources, Breezer14 comes in many variations. This conventions shown in the pictures are used for you to find an appropriate variants in Breezer14 GitHub repository.

Air source

You can select a 5015 blower or a remote blower for Breezer14. Two variants are available.

Stepper angle

The mounting angle of NEMA14 steppers in different extruder designs could be different. Please make sure mounting angle before printing the duct.

Here are the angles measured from the published CAD files of some extruders:

  • 45 degree: Bondtech LGX Lite

  • 40 degree: Sherpa Mini

  • 0 degree: Orbiter

Air nozzle height

3 air nozzles of different heights provided for different hot ends.

Choose a variation

  • Printed stepper tool (1. STL here)

  • Printed air nozzle tools (A set of three. STLs here)

Before printing Breezer14 and disassembling your current extruder, you have to decide:

  1. Air source to be used: 5015 or remote blower.

  2. Angle of the stepper to be mounted: 0°, 40°, 45°.

  3. Height of the air nozzle to be printed: h15, h25, h35.

  4. For the remote blower variant, decide the internal diameter of the hose connecting the blower and the duct: 16mm, 20mm.

Fit these tools to your extruder and choose one of the Breezer14 variations. The tools are thin slices (0.6mm thick) for the shortest print time.

As shown in the picture, the small holes in the stepper tool shows your stepper angle.

Then pick one of the air nozzle tools whose (A) covers the (B) of the stepper tool. This means that air nozzle can be clamped by the duct, and the air nozzle can aim the hotend nozzle.

Parts: the 5015 blower variation

The 5015 blower variant has some major parts:

  1. Duct and stepper mount

  2. Air nozzle

  3. Blower cover

  4. Nozzle cover

The separators inside the duct divides air flow into 2 streams flowing around the stepper and help cool the stepper down.

To adapt different SecKit printers, extruders, air sources and stepper mounting angles, Breezer14 comes in many variations. The next page shows the naming rule for you to find an appropriate variation in Breezer14 GitHub repository.

Parts: the remote blower variation

The remote blower variant has some major parts:

  1. Duct and stepper mount

  2. Air nozzle

  3. Hose connector (16mm or 20mm connectors available)

  4. Hose mount

  5. Nozzle cover

The separators inside the duct divides air flow into 2 streams flowing around the stepper and help cool the stepper down.

Slicing requirements

Breezer14 is designed for 0.4mm nozzle and 0.2mm layer height. ABS and ASA are recommended unless you don't enclose your printer.

To get the best layer adhesion and quality at some small corners/edges, please follow the slicing requirements below and use your quality slicing profile.

Duct (both 5015 & remote blower)

The duct also acts as a mount for the extruder and stepper, so solid infill at certain locations are necessary.

  • Wall thickness
    2.0 mm (for structural strength)

  • Top/bottom thickness
    2.0 mm (for structural strength)

  • Infill
    10%

  • Support
Lines pattern, orientation as shown (for easy removal)

Blower cover (5015 blower only)

Nothing special is needed for this cover.

  • Wall thickness
    1.2 mm

  • Top/bottom thickness
    2.0 mm

Hose connector mount (remote blower only)

Print these components as the orientation shown in the picture.

Hose connectors (remote blower only)

Measure the internal diameter of hose and choose which set to be printed. 2 sets for 16mm and 20mm-hoses are available. Each set provides 3 connectors of different angles (straight, 45° and 90°) for your convenience.

Face the specially-designed flat surfaces down to the bed for the connectors to be printed as smooth as possible (can be rotated in the hose mount), best strength for FDM printing, and easy supports removal.

Nozzle cover

Slicing orientation is specified as shown for necessary strength in its use case. Print it slowly for a best quality at the small tips.

Duct assembly

[Optional] Strip the threads in stepper ears

To attach the NEMA14 stepper to the duct more easily, you might want to strip the threads in the stepper ears in advance.

If the threads in the stepper ears exist, when you feel that the bolt has been fastened, the square nut might not be in position yet, or there might still be a gap between the stepper and the duct.

Attach your extruder to the duct

NEMA14 round stepper duct

  • M3 square nut (2)

  • M3 x 30 bolt (2, the length could be different according to your extruder)

Insert the stepper into the duct with wires at 6 o'clock. A gap is there for the wires to pass through.

Rotate the stepper and align the bolt holes. Fasten the 2 M3 bolts.

5015 blower

  • Printed blower cover

  • 5015 blower

  • Square nut M3 (2)

  • Bolt M3 x 6 (2)

Hose connector (remote blower only)

  • Printed hose connector

  • Printed hose connector mount

  • Square nut M3 (2)

  • Bolt M3 x 20 (2)

Although a larger gap is left in the rotational joint, a drop of lubricant (eg. silicone oil) is still recommended. Remember to thoroughly remove burrs in the joint.

This step can be postponed to the last until the whole extruder carriage is assembled.

Inductive sensor

  • Printed air nozzle

  • Inductive Z probe

Adjust the inductive sensor so the bottom of the sensor is about the same as the nozzles.

(The thread on the sensor in the picture below should extend to the top.)

Air nozzle cover

  • Printed air nozzle cover

  • Square nut M3 (3)

  • Bolt M3 x 10 (3)

A groove and a gap are left for the wires when later the duct is attached to the extruder carriage.

Raise the bottom of air nozzles about 1mm higher than the hotend nozzle.
