RTC Guides for New & Returning Faculty
Enormous gratitude to our RTC faculty and deans in their quick response to the world-wide COVID-19 pandemic as our college moved to online instruction. These heroic efforts achieved excellent results for our entire college community under this unprecedented circumstance.
While catching our breath, it is time to start a responsive action - regaining control over the situation the pandemic brought to us.
If you'd like to provide "on campus" instruction as a modality option for you this upcoming Fall quarter, PLEASE talk to your dean ASAP to request switching your course mode from Fully Online to FLEX (find FLEX description below). FYI: Registration for Summer and Fall is open!
NOTE: Your C!TL team has been preparing to make the FLEX modality a "preferred" option for students and faculty, and we will continue implementing resources and support for the months to come. Questions? Please contact Instructional Designer, Yun Moh, ymoh@rtc.edu
FLEX IS NOT online & on-campus (HYBRID) instruction for a teacher.
FLEX IS on-campus instruction for a teacher, providing the following:
on campus scheduled instruction
online, live attending and interactive students
an online video record of all on-campus instruction, shared the same day
FLEX provides each STUDENT, (3) choices of instruction all quarter long:
on-campus, in person via scheduled class days/times
online, synchronously via live instruction during scheduled class days/times
online asynchronously via same-day recorded instructional videos
FLEX mode trained TEACHERS need the following for student success:
FLEX equipment training and teaching strategies well before registration begins and room assignments issued for an upcoming quarter!
Approval from their dean & C!TL to offer a FLEX course before registration begins for the quarter so it's listed as FLEX class by the college!
A FLEX-capable classroom, equipped with dependable WiFi & technology!
FLEX support via the C!TL team, a trained TA or equivalent, and CTS team

FLEX teaching isn't just combining online and classroom work. It is about shifting our mindsets to a more competency-based style of teaching that allows students more freedom in their learning experiences, while making sure that guidance is available as needed. It means talking to students in front of you and students on a screen at the same time, and finding ways for them to engage with the material and each other.

To provide an adaptable college course for adult students who are caring for their family, have inflexible job commitments, and/or challenges that prevent them from attending scheduled on campus classes, I provide a FLEXible course with (3) options to help my students choose how to navigate their instructional needs and learning styles.
COURSE WORK: All of my course materials, homework submissions, student messages, and grades are delivered online via Canvas and I run my live, recorded lectures using Zoom.
INSTRUCTION/LECTURES: I teach 5 credit courses in-person on campus while transmitting and recording my instruction live during my scheduled class times on campus. This teaching style then provides (3) instructional mode options for my students to choose from:
on campus instruction
Students who can attend live have the advantage of being able to ask questions in person and get help during class times.
online and live instruction
Students who can attend live via Zoom have the advantage of being able to ask questions in the chat tool and get help during class times.
online and recorded instruction
Students who elect to review the class lecture recording outside scheduled class times, ask questions via Canvas and/or acquire tutoring, as well.
MATERIALS: I open my course the week before the quarter begins to help my students "get ready" (acquiring and setting up any course materials and technology) prior to the start of the quarter, if they're able.
CURRICULUM: My courses are TILTed in Canvas. I make everything available at the start of the quarter. I manage my curriculum's access sequentially using Modules (much like weekly chapters) to guide my students from one project to the next. This keeps students from missing steps in their instruction and also allows students to choose to speedup their own pace, if desired.
ASSESSMENTS: Formative assessments each week are essential. These bring to my attention comprehension gaps before it gets too late in the quarter.
OPEN LAB: I provide an optional open lab (drop in) Zoom session once a week.
TEACHER ASSISTANT (TA): Whenever possible I have a skilled/trained TA setup my equipment (camera, mic and webinar), run and record my webinar, and manage the Chat window of Zoom during my live instruction. This level of assistance is essential when I have special needs students. It is essential to student success to have a TA capable of managing technical hiccups during a live in person class that's being simultaneously transmitted and recording the session, while helping students within chat and possible technology challenges, etc.
ACCESSIBILITY: Accommodations need to be managed prior to the start of the class. All lectures should have a text component and Live Caption is now available for free in the browser Chrome.
