RTC Canvas courses have an easy-to-update Syllabus (template)

ALTERNATIVE OPTION

If you'd prefer to use your own syllabus document instead of using the super-cool-and-convenient-template we provide you, please be sure to use this syllabus checklist to confirm that you're including the basic course details every syllabus requires.

Here are steps to replace the template syllabus with your preferred syllabus layout and text:

  1. Within your Canvas course navigation menu, click the Syllabus link/tab.

  2. Click the "Edit (icon)" option to access the syllabus description in edit mode.

  3. Delete what you don't want. Then copy/paste your preferred syllabus text into the syllabus description field.

  4. Click the Update Syllabus button at the bottom.

Find all of RTC's TILT-ed templates at: Transparent Templates for Faculty Use

The following Tools for an Equity-Minded Syllabus list are concepts adopted from the Syllabus Review Guide, A inquiry tool for promoting racial and ethnic equity and equity-minded practice from the Center for Urban Education, USC . (The full guide can be found at http://cue-equitytools.usc.edu)

Tools for an Equity-Minded Syllabus

DEMYSTIFY: Faculty can use syllabi to demystify the implicit norms and ambiguous processes that characterize college, such as how to be a "successful" student.

    • Does your syllabus provide your students with information they need to successfully complete the course in clear, plain language with limited academic jargon.

WELCOME & VALIDATE: Syllabi can welcome them into a classroom where they will be cared for and validate their pursuit of a college degree and ability to be successful.

    • Does your tone and content, communicate care, support, care and inclusion as class norms?

PARTNERSHIP: Syllabi can send the message that while students need to work hard in college, faculty are there to support and work in partnership with them.

    • Communicate your commitment to work with students to ensure their success.

DECONSTRUCT & REPRESENT: Finally, syllabi can affirm the belonging of racially minoritized students in higher education by representing their experiences in course materials and deconstructing the presentation of white students and white experiences as the norm.

    • Promote awareness and critical examination of social inequalities, privilege, and dominant racialized norms.

    • Communicate the value of student's racial backgrounds and lived experiences as sources of learning and knowledge by including them in assignments, readings, and other materials
