ロリーの没後10周年、2005年にまず買ったのが5.1チャンネルの「ハイブリッドSA-CD（スーパーオーディオCD）」。5.1チャンネル用に施したリマスター＆リミックスが「わざわいした」としか言いようがないのでは？いきなり1曲め「Big Guns」でドラムがあちこち散らばって鳴り出した途端「こりゃ大変な事態」と感じた。5.1チャンネルをステレオやイヤホンで聴こうというのなら間違いだと言われるかもしれないが、5.1チャンネル・サラウンド・システム（我が家にはこれがあったのである）でかけてみたんだが……。5.1チャンネルは、大きなライブ会場の臨場感再現のために使われるべきだったのでは？というのが個人的な感想。

前年2004年に親会社がソニーと合併しSONY BMG Music Entertainmentとなった会社の方針もあったようだ。日本の『Player』誌（2005年10月号）のインタビューに答えたドナル・ギャラガー氏のこんな発言がある。「…オリジナル・マスターを5.1ミックスにする作業の途中、偶然ロリーの「もういいよ、モノラルにしようぜ」という声が入っていて、ドキッとさせられたよ。思いがこみ上げてきて、涙が出そうになった。」

紙ジャケ - miniature replica albums

KAMIJAKE (papersleeve) is a unique product made in Japan. Content is normal CD, but held in elaborate paper sleeve instead of plastic case. This papersleeve is miniature replica of original LP sleeve. So, original track list of the record which was first released as LP is printed on the sleeve, though actually, song order has been changed or bonus tracks are added on CD contents.

Papersleeve is said to be (I just read it in newspaper article) all handmade by skilled crafts people, and only Japanese traditional skill or art can make it possible. It came from Japanese tradition of miniature culture like Bonsai.

Papersleeve cannot be producted in large quantities, its cost cannot be reduced. It is issued as 'classic rock' commemoration. Rock artists who's papersleeve miniature replica albums are issued, they are worthy to be treated as memorable rock stars from 20th century LP days.

Collectors often think like that - the sound contents are not important, just the sleeve is valuable and collectable. But in my opinion, record companies should reproduce also the sound contents from original master, not from digital remastered source.

Certain Japanese record shop made a special original box to sell 11 CDs at once by set, and overseas collectors wanted to get this box. (The original box was made each for the set of 3 live CDs and the set of Taste's too, but I don't own anymore.)

ディスクユニオンが全巻揃えでセット販売するための特典として作ったボックスだが、これが紙ジャケ同様じつに丁寧で良くできた仕事だった。当然海外のコレクターが欲しがり、要望のメールが来る度に都内のディスクユニオン各店を回って買い集め、せっせと海外発送した。この写真の他にライブアルバム3枚用にStage Struckデザインの箱（「Satage Struck」とスペルエラーのまま印刷された残念な箱）、BMGとは別のポリドール系レコード会社から出たテイストの4枚用にもTasteファーストアルバムデザインの箱が作られ、全部合わせて私一人で10セット以上はディスクユニオンから買ったはずだ。中には「中身のCDは既にアマゾンで買った、箱だけ欲しい」というやつもいて、お人好しだから断れなくて、一時は私の手元に中身のCDだけ2～3セット余分にあったりした。

2005/2007/2009年に日本で出た紙ジャケのデザインは、細かい所まで、紙質の違いに至るまで、英国盤LPを再現している。

British digipak's artwork is almost recover the original LP sleeve, but some renewals on the other parts.

2012～13年に英国で出たデジパックは、基本的にはLPリリース当時のオリジナルデザインに戻されたが、この『Fresh Evidence』のように微妙に別の写真を使ったり、裏や内側のアートワークが一新されたものもある。

『ライヴ・イン・ジャーマニー・フロム・ロックパラスト　デラックス・エディション』 2008年発売当時500セット限定っていうんで、予約の際にロリーコレクター仲間でてんやわんやの大騒ぎをした。予約開始が一番早かったT店は定価販売で、以後H店、A店と順に価格が下がっていった。ヨーロッパのいずれも当時40代後半のboysに頼まれて何セットか予約購入したけれど、自分の分を確保できないうちに、安い店から販売終了になっちゃった…（というわけで所有していないので、画像はDiscogs.comから借用。もしかしたら私が日本から送ってやったヨーロッパの誰かが、画像をDiscogsに上げてくれたのかも。）

Strat Masters

Strat Masters - The Definitive History of the World's Most Famous Guitar, 167 minutes documentary film for Fender Stratocaster in 2DVD released from Headstock Productions in 2007.

Several segments of Rory filmed in late 1990 or early 1991 in a small studio of Fender showroom in London, talking about his love for Stratocaster and demonstrating his guitar techniques, including I Can't Be Satisfied in casual style performance. Also live footage of Off The Handle from Cork Opera House, 1987/11/04 .

Other 'Strat Masters' - guitarists seen in interview footage: Jeff Beck, Ry Cooder, Robert Cray, Mark Knopfler, Chris Rea, Albert Lee, Barry Martin, Al Jardine, Hank Marvin, Bruce Welch, Richie Kotzen, Malina Moye, Sonny Curtis, Jonah Sithole, Buddy Merrill, Seymour Duncan, etc.

2007年、『Strat Masters』という167分の長編ドキュメンタリーが2枚組DVDでリリースされた。内容的にはフェンダー・ストラトキャスターの販売促進映像なのだが、ストラトの歴史やフェンダー工場での製作過程の紹介、さらに「ストラト・マスター」としてインタビューに登場するのは、ロリー・ギャラガーの他、ジェフ・ベック、ライ・クーダー、マーク・ノップラー、ハンク・マーヴィンといった超豪華な顔ぶれ。しかも全編の冒頭いきなりロリーの短い演奏シーンから始まり、ラストもロリーがソロで弾くマディ・ウォーターズの曲「Can't Be Satisfied」で終わる。DISC 1に3箇所、DISC 2に3箇所、スタジオにおけるロリーのインタビュー＋サンプル演奏シーン、そのうち1回はロリーがあの剥げちょろけのストラトで、ビーチ・ボーイズやクラプトンの演奏を真似してみせてくれる。ロリーの扱いは、ストラト・マスターの代表格だ。だが、全体のシーンーー他の出演者のインタビュー・シーンに比べて、ロリーの出演シーンだけ映像が古い。その理由は後になって知ったのだが、もともと『Stratocasters』というテレビ番組（1992年1月1日にウェールズのテレビ局で放送された）のため、1990年12月～1991年1月のいずれかの日にロンドン市内のフェンダーの小さなショールームで撮影されたシーンだったそうだ。同じショールームで他にハンク・マーヴィン、デヴィッド・ギルモアらのインタビューも収録したが、デモンストレーション演奏は「こんな狭い場所で無理」といった理由で応じてもらえず、自分のギターでストラトの魅力と自身の技法を惜しみなく披露してくれたのはロリーだけだったそうだ。1987年11月4日「Live At Cork Opera House」から「Off The Handle」のライブシーンも挿入されている。

このDVDの難点と言えば、日本語字幕がなく、チャプター設定もないので、もしロリー以外の他の「ストラト・マスター」全員には興味がなく、私みたいに英語も苦手だとすれば、聴いてもわからない大量のインタビュー・シーンをだらだらと見続けて、ロリーのシーンが出てくるのを待つのは、ちとつらい。

米英では『Beat Club Sessions』との2枚組セットだが、日本では『ビート・クラブ・ライヴ 1971-1972』『ストーリー・オブ・ロリー・ギャラガー』の順でそれぞれ別の会社から出た。

Rory Gallagher - The First Irish Rock Star

　1995年、アイルランドの Hot Press 誌はロリー・ギャラガーの訃報翌月の追悼特集にこのタイトルを掲げた。バリーシャノン生まれ、コーク育ち、13歳の頃には地元のショーバンドでエレキギターを弾いて小遣いを稼ぎ始めたロリー・ギャラガー（1948～1995）は、ベルファスト、ハンブルク、ロンドンのクラブシーンを経て、3人組のバンド「テイスト」でレコードデビュー。ソロになった70年代は旺盛なライブツアーを中心に、ロックギタリストとして一時期クラプトンとも肩を並べたほどの世界的名声を得る。だがブルースに深く根差す自身のスタイルを貫いたまま疾走し、流行の移り変わりに迎合することができなかった彼の最後の10年間を顧みる者が、故国アイルランドに何人いただろうか。

　80年代以降の発展が目立つアイルランドの音楽産業に、人生の大半をロンドンや海外のツアー先で過ごしたロリーは何か功績を残したのか…。その発掘が始まるのはさらに数年を経た後のこと。2000年放映のRTE長編ドキュメンタリー From A Whisper To A Scream（DVD邦題『Out Of Ireland ヒストリー・オブ・アイリッシュ・ロック』）に実弟ドナル・ギャラガーが出演し、兄の生い立ちから死に至る47年間を全盛期のライブ映像を交えながら語ったのが、ロリーの再認識、再評価へとつながったようだ。同じく出演者で、番組全体の監修もしたナイアル・ストークスこそ、Hot Press 誌編集長として “The First Irish Rock Star” の称号をロリーに呈した当人だ。

　それ以来、劇場用記録映画 Irish Tour '74 のDVD初リリースをはじめ、ロリーが生前出した14アルバムの完全デジタルリマスター化、未発表音源のCD発売、各国テレビ局に散らばっていたライブ映像のデジタル再放送やDVD発売など、ドナルが引き継いだ会社（ロンドン）はリリースを連発している。一方ロリーの生まれ故郷の町バリーシャノンでは2003年に International Rory Gallagher Tribute Festival の第1回が開催され、以来毎年アイルランドの観光産業に少しは貢献しているようだ。

　そして2010年、Ghost Blues - The Story Of Rory Gallagher という、生前のロリーと20名以上に及ぶインタビューフッテージを含む、ある程度まとまった尺（80分）の評伝的ドキュメンタリーがRTEで放映され、DVDも発売された。あまり勉強しないでもロリー・ギャラガーをテーマに短いエッセイやプレゼンを準備することができる手頃なガイドが出たとも言える。なぜなら再びナイアル・ストークスが登場してロリーの幼年期から70年代にかけてのアイルランドの社会・経済情勢（北アイルランド問題の歴史も含めて）を解説し、それがロリーの人生や音楽の形成に大いに関与したという趣旨が要領良くまとめられ、ドナルやジェリー・マカヴォイ（1971年から91年までロリーのバンドのベーシスト）らの証言や述懐がそこに具体的なイメージを与えるからだ。

　2011年2月27日のアイルランド文化研究会で私は、ロリーのアイルランド初の野外ロックフェスティバル実現の功績、アイルランドについての自身の言及などを、コレクター映像やインタビュー音源を参照しながらプレゼンし、Ghost Blues からも一部を引用したが、それが要注意なのは、長年ロリーと経験を共有したドナルやジェリーでも――口から出まかせとまでは言わないまでも、記憶違いや思い込みで喋ったのかと思える箇所が、アイルランド史勉学の方法で裏を取ろうとしてみたら見受けられたのだ。（たとえば、ベルファスト市内でライブ中に爆弾事件が起きたというジェリーの証言。Conflict Archive on the Internet (Univ of Ulster) というサイトで1970年から77年までの事件の記録を調べたが、ロリーのベルファストライブと一致する日付は見当たらない。）多少の誇張があっても紛争がらみのエピソードは、ロリーにより力強いヒーロー伝説を付け加え、よりロックスターらしく見せるということなのかもしれない。

　私のプレゼンの後半では、晩年のロリーの【ケルティックまたはアイリッシュへの回帰】を扱った。じつは【ブルース】こそロリーに関する最も重要で興味深いテーマだが、先の長い宿題として残った。Ghost Blues の中で複数の出演者が「アイリッシュブルース」という言葉を定義もないまま、それぞれの思いで使うことに違和感を覚えた。いつか解明しようと思う。

ダブリンのカールトンシネマ、コーク・シティーホール、ベルファストのアルスターホールでのライブシーンと、アルスターホール楽屋でのシーン、コークをはじめアイルランド各地の街角でのシーンなどを編集したもの。監督は1969年ロイヤル・アルバート・ホールにおけるクリーム解散コンサート（テイストが前座だった）の記録映像『Cream Farewell Concert』でも知られるトニー・パーマー。当初テレビ用の企画だったと言われるが、劇場公開用として完成した。ロリー自身の独白で綴る構成で、ステージよりもアイルランドの街角や風景（わざわざコーク市近郊の観光地ブラーニー城まで訪れる）の印象が勝り、ライブ場面も良いとこ取りのつなぎ合わせ編集で映像と音が合っていなかったり、彼の楽曲と演奏に特化したファンには少し物足りないかもしれない。だが2000年発売DVDの副音声には、当時の楽器と機材に関するドナル・ギャラガーとジェリー・マカヴォイの会話が収録されていて、興味がある人には面白い。日本でも自主上映されたことがあったそうだが、マネージャー／プロデューサーの実弟ドナル・ギャラガーの管理で長年門外不出になっていた（欧州某国でテレビから録画ダビングを重ねたと思われる、悲惨な画質のブートレッグビデオは陰で流通していたようだが）。

ドナルのプロデュースで2000年に日の目を見たバージョンは、1974年制作当時と基本的には同じものだが、「Cradle Rock」が追加され、さらに最終シークエンスに「指輪の落し物」のアナウンスが付け足されている。またボーナストラックとして、本編収録直後の1974年1月の初来日、東京・芝郵便貯金ホール（？）の楽屋と通用口付近で、ドナルが撮って編集したと思われる8mm映像も入っている。

また2000年版DVDの副音声では、ドナル・ギャラガーが、アメリカの自動車王ヘンリー・フォードの祖父がコーク出身で、フォードの組立工場がコークにあって当時最大の雇用を生み出していたこと、「Souped-Up Ford」がそれを歌った曲だったこと、工場閉鎖にロリーが怒ってこの曲をアルバムから削除すると言ったことなどを語る。（「Going To My Hometown」でも「ヘンリー・フォードの仕事にありついたけど…」と歌われている。）

カメラはベルファストの街角にも出、北アイルランド紛争の投石や放火あるいは銃撃でボロボロになったドックストリート付近の建物も、わずかな時間だが記録している。紛争をテーマにした映画でも実際にベルファスト・ロケで撮影されたものはほとんどなく、報道やドキュメンタリーフィルム以外で紛争ピーク時のベルファストの街路を記録し、メジャー公開された映像は珍しいのではないかと思う。

Bootleg VHS which Megumi first watched in 1996.

じつは私が最初に見たのは、1996年西新宿で偶然見つけて買ったこのブートレッグVHS。画質も音も最低だったが、歩いて、喋って、大歓声の中で激しく動き回るロリー（らしき人の影）を見たというだけで、嬉しくてたまらなかった。何故かドイツ語字幕入り。しかも白黒だったかもしれない（今はもうVHSビデオデッキを持っていないので確認できない）が、惜しくて捨てられない。
