アイルランド南部の都市コーク、ロリーが1956年からテイストを結成してベルファストに移る1968年頃まで住んでいたマッカータン・ストリート。通りの西端から、土曜の朝の眺め。

クロウリー楽器店の壁面にこんな銘板が取り付けてある。「ロリー・ギャラハー* 1948-1995、ミュージシャンにして作曲家。彼はこの通りに住んだ。」（*地元の人、ほとんどのアイルランド人はやはり、ギャラガーではなくギャラハーと発音するようだ。あなたはどう発音するかとコーク市立図書館のベテラン司書キティさんに、予測はできたけれど試しに尋ねてみたら、「ギャラハー！」と断言されてしまった。）

Crowley's music shop, where Rory bought Stratocaster '61 model when he was 15 years old. At that time, the shop was not the same place today. It was located across River Lee, now the location of Merchants Quay Shopping Centre.
ロリーが15歳の時に61年型ストラトキャスターを買ったクロウリー楽器店。ただし当時はこの店は現在地ではなく、リー河の対岸、現在マーチャンツ・キー・ショッピングセンターになっている場所にあった。

Ashley Hotel opposite of the street corner. It is former The Munster Hotel, the sign still remains on the outer wall of the building. I asked about The Cavern, once a club at 100 meters down Leitrim Street from the hotel where The Taste used to play regularly in their earlier time. But young hotel staff did not know about such old time.
マッカータン・ストリートの西の角を曲がったすぐの所に、アシュレイ・ホテルがある。（私ここに泊まった。）ここは昔はマンスター・ホテルと呼ばれ、外壁には古い看板がまだ残っているが、当時ホテルから約100メートル先には、第1期テイスト（コーク出身のエリック・キッタリングハム、ノーマン・デイムリーとロリー）がレギュラーで演奏していたというクラブ「キャヴァーン」があったという。若い従業員に尋ねてみたが、そんな大昔のことは知らなかった。

Some informations are telling that Rory's grandmother's bar Roches where Rory lived upstairs with his mother and brother has been replaced by a company named Tele Cabs. I found Tele Cabs (28 MacCurtain St.) just the next building to Crowley's (29 MacCurtain St.). Both of them are available to see in one photo frame. (Yellow painted one is Tele Cabs.)
他の本や「Cork Rocks for Rory」のようなロリーサイトによれば、ロリーは母と弟と一緒に、祖母がやっていたロッチェスというバーの2階に住んでいたが、今その場所にはテレキャブという24時間配車のタクシー会社が入っている、と書いてある。テレキャブはこの1枚の写真に写っているとおり（黄色いペイントの店がテレキャブ）クロウリー楽器店の左隣の建物だ。（ロリーが住んでいた当時、クロウリー楽器店は別の場所、リー河の対岸にあった。）

There is a large bar with signboard GALLAGHER'S at the corner entrance to MacCurtain Street. I have not yet made certain, but I think it has no relationship with Rory.
「ギャラハーズ」という大きなパブが、マッカータン・ストリートの入り口に堂々と看板を出している。中に入って確かめたことはないけれど、これってロリーとの親戚関係はないと思う。（アイルランド製品輸入の仕事をしている私は10年ぐらい前から数回コークを訪れているが、ここにこんな店があることに気がついたのはつい2～3年前だ。）

There are steep hills behind MacCurtain Street on northern side of Cork city. Looking down from St. Patrick's Hillside.
マッカータン・ストリートのすぐ北側には小高い丘陵地が迫っていて、どの通りもかなりの急坂だ。セント・パトリックス・ヒルの登り坂の途中から市中心部の方を見下ろしてみた。

River Lee separates the city in southern part and northern part. MacCurtain Street lies between northern riverside and hillside. Cork City is now in great redevelopment.
リー河がコーク市を南北に2分している。マッカータン・ストリートは河の北岸と丘陵地の間に位置する。コーク市は数年前から再開発ブームだ。

Tribute statue by Gerardine Cleedon is standing in one of such old area - former St. Paul Street Square, now officially renamed Rory Gallagher Place (Plas Ruairi Ui Ghallchouir) since 1997.
ロリーの旧友が創ったというブロンズのオブジェは、そんな旧市街、地図で見てもちょっとわかりにくい場所の小さな広場にある。この広場はかつてはセント・ポール・ストリート・スクエアと呼ばれていたが、1997年に市議会の決議で正式に、ロリー・ギャラガー・プレイス（アイルランドの“第1国語”ゲール語でルアリー・イ・ガルホール広場）と名称変更された。

Now this building is a shopping centre on St. Patrick's Street. But in Ireland, Savoy has been originally a brand name of big entertainment centre, mostly cinema on the main street. Rory performed here several times in his early career. Moreover, he would come to see movies a lot of times here.
コーク市一番の繁華街セント・パトリックス・ストリートに面するサヴォイ。今はショッピングセンターだが、かつては劇場やコンサートホールも兼ねる映画館で、ロリーもテイスト時代にここで何度かライブをやった。だがそれ以上に、映画好きだった彼は弟を連れて、ほんの子供だった頃から何度となくここに足を運んで映画を見たことだろう。元来アイルランドでサヴォイといえば映画館だ。（ダブリンのサヴォイは今も映画館として健在。）

20-30 minute drive westbound from Cork City centre along River Lee, turning to left farm road before Ballincollig (Baile an Chollaigh) village, you will find St. Oliver's Cemetery in a peaceful countryside.
コーク市中心部から車で西へ20～30分、リー河沿いの道を走り、バリンコリグという村の手前で左の農道に入ると、静かな田園地帯の中にセント・オリヴァー墓地がある。

I left my red Fender pick with picks which had been already left. I felt people who visited and left those memorabilia - including coins, dolls and leprechaun, picks, slide bar, harmonica, maybe their own sunglasses and accessories, notes, photos - they are all my friends at heart.
コイン、小さなテディベアやレプラコーン（アイルランドの妖精）、ピック、スライドバー、ハーモニカ、サングラス、アクセサリー…、その他いろんな記念品が置いてあった。私も自分の赤いフェンダーピックを置いてきた。ここに来て何か置いてった人々はみんな、私の友だちのような気がした。

Ballincollig village. Entrance to beautiful valley scenery and river leisure site. Actually it was terrible stormy weather on Saturday when I visited Cork. As it always happens in Ireland, it rained on and off all day, so I could take photographs catching the occasions. Even the sun began to shine for an hour during I was visiting Rory's grave. Right after the moment I took this photo of village view, weather turned rainy and hailstormy again.
ロリーのお墓から少し先に、バリンコリグという村がある。リー河上流の景勝地、釣りやボート遊びのサイトへの入り口だ。じつは私が訪れた2009年1月17日、コーク地方はものすごい暴風雨に見舞われたのだが、一日のうちに天気がくるくる変わるのがアイルランドの常で、私は雨が降り止んだチャンスを捉えては写真を撮っていたわけだ。ロリーのお墓を訪ねた時には1時間ほど青空が見えて陽すら射した。だがこの村の写真を撮った後には再び天候が悪化し、雨と雹（ひょう）で観光どころではなくなった。

バリンコリグから更に先のドリプシーという村。辻の周りにパブとガソリンスタンドと、なぜか開いていないことが多いアンティーク屋が1～2軒。アイルランドの田舎にありがちな光景だ。

Back in Cork City centre. Typical Irish pub dinner with a glass of Murphy's. At Victoria Hotel bar on St. Patrick's Street. Time is passing slowly here. Try to choose Murphy's for your stout, which is brewed in County Cork - Guinness is product from Dublin as you know.
再びコーク市内。セント・パトリックス・ストリートに面した古いホテル、ヴィクトリア・ホテルのバーでの食事。グレービーソースのたっぷりかかったラム肉のローストに、マッシュポテトとベイクドポテト、味付けもなく茹でただけのニンジンとグリンピース、という典型的なパブディナー。それにスタウトは敢えてギネスではなく、ここはご当地ブランドのマーフィーズといこう。時間がゆるゆると流れる―つまり初老のバーマンがひとりでやっていて、注文を取りにくるのも何をするのも待たされる。コーク市内で今どきアイリッシュ・トラッドをBGMに流している店はここぐらいかもしれない。

時は流れすべてが変わりゆくように見えても、なおこの街は輝いている。なぜって、ここはロリーが育った町だから！

A tourist rather rarely see such snow covered landscape in Ireland. Local drivers who always dash at 100 k.p.h. or over, slow down to 30 k.p.h. safety speed and in a moment they stack up traffic on highway. Somewhere inland in County Tipperary, morning 18 Jan 2009.
アイルランドでこんな雪景色を見ることはむしろ珍しい。普段車を100キロ台ですっ飛ばしている連中が途端に時速30キロの超安全運転になり、ハイウェイはたちまち渋滞する。内陸ティペラリーのどこかで18日の午前中に撮影。

These photos and captions are from 2009, so some views and scenes may have changed since then. For instance, Crowley's Music Centre on MacCurtain Street closed down in 2013 and reopened the business in 2023 as a workshop and sale of used instruments on Friar Street, south side of Cork City.
このページに載せた写真とキャプションはすべて2009年当時なので、その後に変わった景色もある。たとえば、クロウリーズ楽器店。1974年にマーチャンツ・キーからマッカータン・ストリート（このページの写真の場所）に移転し営業を続けた2代目店主ミック・クロウリーが2010年に死去、娘シーナ・クロウリーが3代目店主を継いだが2013年にいったん閉業を余儀なくされた。それから10年を経てワークショップと中古楽器販売という形で2023年、同市南側のフライア・ストリートで事業を再開したそうだ。
