Rory's very first concert in Japan. This show was not on their first tour plan. They cancelled the last show on January 30 and advanced the tour schedule. So this additional first show was not sold out. Even the show was in great success. At the end of the show excited Japanese audience crowded on the stage and someone snatched away a pick from Gerry's hand.
1974年日本での初公演、芝・郵便貯金ホール。客席からの隠し録りが残されていた。ロリーがアコースティックナンバー「As The Crow Flies」の中間で、当時まだ日本人には馴染みの薄かったアイリッシュトラッド風の旋律を弾き始めると、徐々に満場の手拍子となり盛り上がってゆく。じつは当初の公演日程では1月25日の中野サンプラザが初日で1月30日の郵便貯金ホールが最終公演となっていたが、来日直前にスケジュール変更があったようだ。そのせいかこの急遽追加された初日は満席にはならなかったそうだが、終盤には客がステージ上にまで押しかけて---実際に見に行った知人が警備のアルバイトをした友人から聞いたという話では、ジェリー・マカヴォイの手からピックを奪い取った客までいたとか、すごかったらしい。

This audience recording of Rory Gallagher concert in Nagoya, Japan, 27th of January, 1974 is probably the first appearance of the show open to the public after its 34 years' concealment.
In January 2008, we came to know a Japanese man who filmed the show from the 2nd floor at Nagoya-shi Kokaido (Nagoya City Public Hall). It is a 4 minute footage of 8 mm film, perhaps the first and only publicly available motion picture of Rory on stage in Japan. The man was not particularly a fan of Rory Gallagher, but Rory impressed him as an unforgettable, single-hearted guitar player.
We were told that he also recorded the whole concert including the encore in 2 cassette tapes using the best equipment back in those days. After some negotiation, the taper agreed with us to have this recording digitally converted. We received the tape 1 from him, but the tape 2 was not to be found.
We almost gave up on the tape 2 and were prepared to release the first half of the concert digitally mastered in 1CD on the occasion of Rory's 60th birthday. It was just a few days before the scheduled release date, the 2nd of March, when we heard from the taper that he finally found the tape 2. Who could deny Rory's help from heaven for this?
We have spent ample time and taken great care to convert the tapes into digital audio CDs. The owner of the tapes has recorded and filmed various artists' concerts in Nagoya in 1970s. It was fortunate for us that he was already accustomed and skilled in recording when Rory Gallagher first toured in Japan in 1974, and was capable to do this high quality recording of Rory at the top of his form.
With this short history, this project was finished in June 2008, and we proudly decided to call it 'Rory Gallagher LIVE in JAPAN'.
Thanks to W for his advice and help from Europe. Great thanks and respect to osm, the taper from Japan, a music lover, who shared this masterpiece with us to make it possible to provide the recording to all the Rory fans. And "Thank you very much indeed!" Mr. Rory Gallagher.

[2008年6月の記述] 2008年1月、34年間どこにも出さずに録音者本人の自宅に保管されていたというカセットテープが、名古屋から郵送されてきた。慎重に取り込んだデジタル音源テイク1で、エレックトリックバージョンの「Too Much Alcohol」を初めて聴いた時、関係者全員ぶっ飛んだ。「これはアイリッシュツアーを超えちゃったかも！」と思った…。ロリー絶頂期の演奏を当時最高の録音機器（デンスケ）を使用して完全収録したオーディエンス録音。録音者はロリー・ギャラガー特定のファンだったのではなく、1970年代来日アーティストの名古屋公演を数多く録音してきたとのことで、相当手慣れた録音。だからこそ、74年のロリー初来日でこれほどハイクォリティな録音が残り得たわけだ。それも、高価だったクロームメタルテープを再利用し、ロリーの直前の1週間に来日公演していたムーディー・ブルースの録音を潰して、オーバーラップ録音してしまったようだ。（ムーディー・ブルースのファンにはお気の毒。）我々ロリーファンにとっては天から降ってきた幸運としか言いようがない。カセットテープ2本のうち後半の1本が、録音者の家の中でなかなか見つからず、いったんは我々も諦めて、3月2日のロリー生誕60周年を機に前半だけの1CDで発表する寸前だったのを、そのわずか数日前に録音者から「2本めが見つかった」との連絡、急遽発表延期したという奇跡のような経緯のオマケ付き。まるでロリーが天国から身を乗り出して手を貸してくれたかのようだ。初めての日本のファンの前で全力で演奏するロリーは、特に熱狂的ファンだったわけではない録音者にとっても、忘れがたい好印象だったそうだ。名古屋市公会堂の音響も、客席の声援も、すべてが申し分ない。特にトラック15「In Your Town」、客席との“コラボレーション”は圧巻。ただ、20分に及ぶ演奏の終盤でテープ交換がされていたが、ビートを数えながら違和感を最小におさえて繋いだつもりだ（muew氏の功績）。ロリー、ジェリー、ロッド、ルーの最高の演奏、34年も昔に録音されたことを考えればこれ以上は望みようのない状態で発掘した録音を、アマチュアの我々に可能な最善の形で再現して、なんとかカットなしの完全盤で、世界中のロリーファンに伝えたかった。これはもう“文化遺産”だ---というのは発掘者のひいき目だろうか？
[2011年追記] その後、オリジナルのカセットテープ（上の写真）は、同じオーディエンスが撮影した8mmフィルムとともに、ロンドンのストレンジミュージック社に寄贈。2011年にオフィシャルリリースされたBlu-ray/DVD『Rory Gallaher Irish Tour '74 ロリー・ギャラガー アイリッシュ・ツアー1974 スペシャルエディション』のボーナストラック「Japanese Tour '74」の音声トラックに、この録音の「In Your Town」が採用された。>> 参照 Release 2005-2014

We handed the tapes and 8mm-film which were from the same audience in Nagoya 1974 to Strange Music, and In Your Town sound source and filmed short footage were adopted for Japanese Tour '74, extra 11-min. footage of Irish Tour '74 special edition Blu-ray/DVD released in 2011.
To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Rory's first visit to Japan 1974, we uploaded In Your Town sound source in 18-min. full length version to YouTube channel of Rory Gallagher Tribute Festival in Japan in January 2024.

"Is it forgotten or the lost show in Tokyo January 30, 1974?"
When you have got a chance to see Rory's Tokyo Japan 1974 tour poster or flier, you will find the date January 30 on it. It would have been a mystery for Rory collectors. Actually the show of January 30 was cancelled. In their first plan, Rory would have had 3 shows in Tokyo on 25th, 26th at Nakano Sunplaza and the last show on 30th at Shiba Yubin-Chokin Hall. But after they sold tickets they changed the schedule and shifted the last show on 30th to the first show on 23rd at the same venue. It might be caused by flight schedule or changing something of USA and Canada tour continuing directly after Japan tour.
1974年東京公演のポスターやチラシを見ると「1月30日、芝・郵便貯金ホール」の記述があるので、特に海外のコレクターには混乱の元になっているようだが、来日直前にスケジュール変更があり、30日の公演予定は中止され急遽23日に追加された。彼らは22日夜パンナム便で羽田に到着、30日夜にはJAL便で羽田からアメリカに向けて飛び立っている。

All acoustic solo for radio broadcasting. Date/year is suspicious, because he played Out On The Western Plain which should be in 1975.
フランスでラジオ放送されたスタジオライブ。全曲アコースティックで美しい演奏と録音だが、「Out On The Western Plain」が入っていて、1974年というのは疑わしい。1975年5月にもフランスツアーを行なっているので、1975年かもしれない。同じスタジオ名で1974年ライブだという初出音源が『The French Connection』というLPになり、2018年に公式リリースされている。

「ピンクポップ」は1970年から現在に至るまでオランダ南端の町で開催される野外フェスティバルで、『ワイト島1970～懐かしきロックの残像』乗りで編集された『ヴィンテージ・イヤーズ 1970～1974』という名場面集DVDが、2004年にオランダでのみ発売された。フォーカス、ゴールデン・イヤリングを筆頭にオランダのバンドももちろん出演するが、フェアポート・コンヴェンション、ステイタス・クォー、ウィッシュボーン・アッシュ、コックニー・レベル、マンゴ・ジェリーといったブリティッシュロック（フォークロック）勢が目立つ。残念ながら収録21曲のほどんどが音なしの8mmフィルム映像に、別録りまたはアルバムからの音をダビングしたもののようで、映像的にもステージより会場に集まる若者風俗の記録の方が多い。ウィッシュボーン・アッシュの「King Will Come」などイントロと出だしのリフと最後を残して中間をごっそり省略し、肝心のツインリード･ギターの掛け合いも歌も抜きで終わってしまう。ロリーは1974年6月開催のメインヘッダーで、紹介テロップにはユニオンジャックのマーク付きで英国勢扱いなのが残念だが、「Laundromat」の演奏シーンがほとんどカットなしで堂々の大トリだ。ただし宵闇が迫って当時のカメラでは露出不足でうまく撮影できなかったらしく、1曲の4分の1ぐらいの短時間しかロリーの姿は映らない（カメラの位置と角度の都合でジェリー・マカヴォイの顔の方がたくさん映る）し、音も当時の録音ではなく、アルバム『Live In Europe』からの借用だ。

1992 7 songs from above were issued as Calling Hard in G-MEN Bootleg Series Volume One 3CD box officially released.
上記から7曲が『Calling Hard』というタイトルのブートレッグで出回ったが、それを後の1992年、ロリー自身のストレンジ・レコード社がそのままCD化し『G-MEN Bootleg Series』という3CDセットに入れて発売してしまった。

Status Quo: On The Level, LP released in UK 1975/02. Decades later John W. discovered a tiny image of Rory in the photos inside the gatefold sleeve.
「僕はステイタス・クォーのファンでもあって1975年リリースのこのLPを昔から持っていたのだが、つい最近、見開きジャケットの写真の中にクォーのメンバーと一緒にロリーが写っているのを偶然発見した」と英国の友人が教えてくれた。
Status Quo: On The Level, LP 1975 (gatefold sleeve inner right). These photos seem to be taken in occasion of North American tour 1974.
「え？そのLPなら私も持っているよ」と引っぱり出してみたが、我が家にあったのは後年再発の廉価盤で、見開きジャケットではなくシングルジャケットだった。よって見開きジャケットの画像をDiscogs.comから拝借。左下で指差したほんの小さい立ち姿がロリーと思われる。ロリーは1974年夏の北米ツアーをステイタス・クォーと共に回っており、その間に撮られたスナップ写真だろう。

終盤「Laundromat」から「Who's That Coming」まで、たて続けに4曲29分間ノンストップ。歌も演奏も次第に荒っぽくなってくるが、客席もロリー自身もどんどんエキサイトしていって物凄い。
