ローリング・ストーンズ・セッション

1975年1月23日と24日、アイルランドツアーと日本ツアーの合間の短期間に、ロリーはローリング・ストーンズとオランダのロッテルダムでスタジオセッションを録音している。日本への出発を2週間後に控え、アイルランドツアーの最終地コークの実家で待機中、前年ミック・テイラーが脱退し後任探しを始めたストーンズのセッション・キーボード奏者イアン・ステュアート本人から、アルバム『ブラック・アンド・ブルー』用のセッション申し入れの電話が入る。ツアーマネージャーの弟ドナルを実家に残し、ロリーひとりで楽器持参でロッテルダムに行くと、ミック・ジャガーが空港に出迎え、ストーンズ側の代理人が書類を揃えて待ち構え（彼らはロリーにいきなり「ストーンズへようこそ！」と言ったという）、報道も「ストーンズ新メンバー候補」の取材に群がった。セッションの方はスタジオ機材トラブルで待たされ続け、準備ができたら今度はキース・リチャーズが現れない。ギタリストどうしキースと話し合うべきだと思ったロリーがキースのホテルの寝室に上がってゆくと、キースはベッド上で人事不省だった。数時間後に上がってゆくがまだダメ。3度めも同じだったので、ロリーは自分の荷物をまとめてその足で日本に旅立った。当時ストーンズは主にキースのドラッグ問題のせいで入国ヴィザが下りない国が多く、ライブ売り上げではロリーに大きく負けていたという。ミックとキースの仲違いの噂もあり、特にイアン・ステュアートはロリーの加入を熱望したらしい。キースはロリーにポジションを奪われると思って猛反対したとも、いや、キースがロリーを気に入っていたのだとも言われ、今となっては真相は藪の中だが、ロリーがギタリストとしてキースをとても尊敬していたことは、どのインタビューでも彼は「キースは凄いギタリストだ」と言っているので間違いない。彼らのセッション曲はその名も「Miss You」、ロリーが参加したテイクはアルバムには採用されなかったようだ。ストーンズの後任探しセッションにはその後ジェフ・ベック、ライ・クーダー、スティーヴ・マリオット、ピーター・フランプトンら当時人気のギタリストが次々呼ばれた。フェイセズからロン・ウッドのストーンズ加入はさらに翌1976年になる。

収録アルバム『Against The Grain』の1975年10月リリース後は、レッドベリーの原曲に添った歌い方でほぼ固定して、晩年まであまり変わらない「Out On The Western Plain」だが、アルバム制作前のライブでは少し違う歌い方、よりケルティックなブリティッシュ・フォークロック風の演奏を聴くことができる。
