PUZ Achievements & Recent Activities
Since its inception in 2018, Pur Umeed Zindagi (PUZ) has established itself as a structured, community‑based mental health program dedicated to improving access to free, ethical, and evidence‑based mental health services across Pakistan. The program addresses the growing burden of mental health concerns through early screening, counseling, awareness, and sustainable follow‑up care.
PUZ currently operates across four regions of Pakistan—Karachi, Sindh, Balochistan, and Punjab—with services delivered through 17 program sites. The program is supported by a workforce of 34 trained Mental Health Officers (MHOs) working under the clinical supervision of qualified psychologists. This model enables PUZ to reach diverse populations, including underserved and rural communities.
PUZ has successfully integrated routine mental health screening into community and facility‑based settings using standardized tools such as PHQ‑2, GAD‑2, PHQ‑9, GAD‑7, and MANSA. These assessments support early identification of anxiety, depression, and quality‑of‑life concerns.
Based on screening outcomes:
Individuals with mild to moderate symptoms receive structured counseling and psychosocial support
Moderate to severe cases are referred to psychologists or specialized services
Clients are followed through a defined care pathway including enrollment, follow‑ups, and end‑of‑treatment evaluation
This approach ensures continuity of care and measurable improvement in mental well‑being.
Community engagement remains a core strength of PUZ. Mental Health Officers conduct daily community awareness sessions to reduce stigma, improve mental health literacy, and promote help‑seeking behavior. These sessions have been carried out in multiple urban and rural settings, contributing to increased community acceptance of mental health care and early intervention.
PUZ implements the WHO Task Shifting Model, empowering trained MHOs and lay counselors to deliver evidence‑based interventions under professional supervision. Key capacity‑building achievements include:
Initial and refresher trainings for MHOs
Regular clinical supervision and case reviews
Skill strengthening in counseling, screening, and referral practices
Crisis response capacity through Psychological First Aid (PFA) trainings
This model has strengthened service availability while maintaining quality and ethical standards.
PUZ has actively conducted and contributed to several awareness and capacity‑building initiatives, including:
World Mental Health Day (October 2025) – Community awareness activities promoting mental health literacy and access to services
Stress Management Seminar (November 20, 2025) – Focused on practical coping strategies, relaxation techniques, and emotional regulation
Psychological First Aid in Crises Workshop (December 9, 2025 – Badin Campus) – Strengthened crisis response skills and referral pathways
Psychological First Aid in Crises Workshop (January 16, 2026 – Karachi) – Capacity building for healthcare professionals on trauma, crisis response, and self‑care
Employee Well‑Being and Burnout Awareness Session (January 21, 2026) – Focused on workplace stress, burnout, and healthy coping mechanisms
PUZ maintains robust program oversight through daily data entry in REDCap, ensuring systematic documentation of:
Screening
Enrollment
Counseling sessions
Follow‑ups
End‑of‑treatment outcomes
This data‑driven approach supports monitoring, evaluation, quality improvement, and evidence‑based planning.
PUZ contributes to research and learning within community mental health through:
Ongoing studies on the effectiveness of task‑shifted lay counseling for anxiety and depression
Development of research focusing on quality‑of‑life outcomes, including adolescent mental health
Use of structured data systems to inform practice and future scale‑up
Pur Umeed Zindagi continues to strengthen community‑based mental health services by combining early detection, ethical counseling, awareness, and continuous care—bringing hope, dignity, and mental well‑being to individuals and families across Pakistan.
