About Pur Umeed Zindagi (PUZ)
Pur Umeed Zindagi (PUZ) was launched in 2018 as a response to the growing need for accessible mental health and addiction services in Pakistan. Since its inception, the program has expanded to 4 regions—Karachi, Sindh, Balochistan, and Punjab—covering 17 sites and building a strong network of 34 Mental Health Officers (MHOs). These MHOs provide screenings for anxiety and depression, enrollment, and baseline counseling for individuals with moderate symptoms, while severe cases are referred to psychologists for specialized care.
PUZ operates under the Community Health Directorate (CHD) of Indus Hospital & Health Network (IHHN) and has become a trusted program, making a meaningful impact on the mental health and well-being of thousands of individuals and communities—completely free of cost.
Our approach integrates the WHO Task Shifting Model, enabling Lay Counselors to deliver evidence-based counseling under the supervision of qualified psychologists. Psychologists not only manage severe cases but also:
Conduct clinics for patients requiring advanced care.
Serve as regional supervisors or leads, ensuring quality and ethical practices across all sites.
Oversee training programs for MHOs, including initial training for new recruits and refresher trainings every six months.
Work alongside Master Trainers to maintain high standards of care and continuous professional development.
PUZ provides free, confidential, and ethical mental health services, including early screening, counseling, therapy, follow-ups, and referral pathways. By bridging gaps in mental health care, PUZ aims to create a healthier, more resilient society.
