Purpose: In Preschool SDI, we use practice profiles and fidelity checks to provide guidance to teachers, coaches, and SDI teams on implementation fidelity for the practices and strategies that are learned in Preschool SDI. There are 7 practice profiles/fidelity checks across all three SDI component areas of Diagnose, Design, and Deliver. The information collected can be used to plan next steps in the SDI Action Plan, including additional coaching and/or training that might be needed. The fidelity checks can also be used during and across years to measure progress towards full implementation of the Preschool SDI practices.
Who completes the fidelity checks? The instructional coach and/or other observers who are familiar with the Preschool SDI strategies. The fidelity check should be completed after an observation but also with input from the teacher and classroom team.
What information is needed? The instructional coach will want to conduct an observation but also may need to interview the classroom team and/or look at various products and documentation in order to rate the items. In the "Source of Evidence" column, there are suggestions for what to observe, interview questions to ask, and documentation to look at for each item.
When should the checks be completed? Teams should begin using these tools after the content has been learned during professional development and teams have had a chance to practice the skills. We recommend beginning to use these tools in Year 2 but they could be used sooner or later depending on the comfort of the team. The fidelity checks do not all have to be used at once, rather, each one can be used as the content of that particular fidelity check is learned and implemented. In Year 3, teams will want to start using all of the checks as they work towards full implementation. They can be used multiple times to monitor progress, for example every couple of months, or 2-3 times per year, as needed.
In addition to the Preschool SDI Fidelity Checks, these are additional tools that could be useful in measuring fidelity of specific practices
This tool is designed to provide guidelines for educators in writing quality IFSP/IEP goals and objectives. The R-GORI was adapted from Notari-Syverson, A. R., & Shuster, S. L. (1995). Each module contains fidelity checklists for that specific EBP. Here are just a few of those checklists that are shared in Preschool SDI:
These Performance Checklists are intended for practitioners (and leaders where noted) to increase their understanding and use of the DEC RP's and for self-evaluation of one's use of the practices. Here are just a few that relate to Preschool SDI:
There are several checklists and tools available based on the research and work of Robin McWilliam, author of the STARE. Here are a few fidelity checks that align well to Preschool SDI (the Engagement Classroom Model is very similar to Preschool SDI practices):
