India's Daughter - Documentary

On September 9, 2022, the Department of English organized a movie screening featuring "India's Daughter," a documentary film directed by Leslee Udwin and part of the BBC's ongoing Storyville series. The documentary centers around the tragic 2012 Delhi gang rape and murder of a 23-year-old physiotherapy student known as "Nirbhaya." Despite calls for its ban in India, the question arises: Will banning the film decrease the occurrence of rape crimes? In my understanding and experience, it seems unlikely. Banning such a documentary that sheds light on the harsh reality of the world does not address the root causes of the issue. Instead of curbing rape incidents, it appears to be an attempt to conceal the harsh truths. What is the fear behind those who advocate for the ban? Could it be a concern that their beloved country might be exposed to the world?
