Welcome to the Scripps Chula Vista Emergency Department!
**Navy residents** please contact our GME coordinator Fernando Sanchez to make sure your
badge paperwork is ready and that you have access to Epic. He prefers you contact him at
least 1 month in advance. It is also a good idea to show up early to your first shift to make sure
your passwords are good to go.

Expectations for ALL Residents:
1. Notes
-Ask the attending if they want you to do a note. Some prefer to do their own.
-Use an Epic ED template. See Dr. Giglia or ask doc you are working with to share one.
-Let the attending do the critical care and obs note (our times must match so easier that way)
-Input the Pmhx, Pshx, SocHx (drugs/tob/etoh), and Fhx in all of your ED notes if not already
there from a past visit. This is mandatory for a Level 5 chart. You do this under the “triage” tab
of the note. Family hx unknown does NOT satisfy requirements for billing. Then click
“reviewed” at that bottom and it will pull into your note.
-ROS must say “All ROS reviewed and negative except what was mentioned in the H+P” or for
a fast-track type patient “5 ROS reviewed and ...”
2. Procedures
-While you will get to do the intubations, lines, LPs, and chest tubes, we will also enlist your
help with lacerations and abscesses. Even if you are not excited about a hand lac, fake it and it
will get you far!
-Please complete the procedure note even if you did not see the patient primarily
3. Shifts
-Your shifts will be 6a-4p, 2p-12p, 10p-8a. There is an attending with these exact times, but
you are not required to present to only him/her and are encouraged to spread the wealth. If you
can not tell who is ready for another patient, just ask.
-Please sign up for a few night shifts and include a few weekend shifts as well to be fair to all
residents on the rotation.
IMPORTANT: The attending during these shift times will stop picking up new patients 2 hours
before the end time to allow time for cleanup and minimize turnover. HOWEVER, your shift
ends at the end time above and you are expected to see patients to the end. You will not
stay late so do not worry!!! Please sign out any pending patients to the attending you are
seeing them with when you leave, we do not expect you to stay after your shift time. It is
noticed if you leave early without asking and trust me, I hear about it!
4. Google Calendar
-If you need to reschedule a shift, please email me and we can definitely accommodate you as
long as there is not another resident on that shift. We only want one resident per shift due to
lack of computer space.
-If you are sick or have an emergency and can not come to your shift, please text me and let
me know. I don’t care what time it is.
