There is an elective opportunity at the pain clinic for a 2-4 week rotation if you’re interested. The POC is CDR Christopher Ryan Phillips. Information regarding this rotation is listed below:
From: "Phillips, Christopher R (Ryan) CDR USN NAVMEDCEN SAN CA (USA)" christopher.r.phillips40.mil@mail.mil - Good morning, I wanted to reach out to let you know that we are happy to host any of your residents or interns for a 2-4 week rotation in the pain clinic if they are interested/curious about the specialty. We have historically been anesthesia-heavy as pain is a required rotation for anesthesia residents, but RDML Hancock has requested that we look for ways to diversify our specialty. Our program has trained non-anesthesiologists previously, and our current fellows are PM&R and psychiatry.
The interns have a new cardiology outpatient rotation 1 week elective. This is the breakdown of what to expect
Mondays: patients following up from ED/new patients seen independently under supervision of cardiology PA
Tuesdays: cath conference (attendance expected, 0700 cards conference room). Active Duty clinic follows conference in which AD patients are seen with resources scheduled to complete diagnostics (echo, gxt, start of holter monitoring) the same day
Wednesdays: vascular conference (attendance expected, 0700 radiology conference room). Stress echos/GXT typically performed, otherwise fellows/attendings see patients and are open to rotator seeing a patient if clinically interesting/beneficial. Cardiology didactics (attendance expected, 1300-1500 cards conference room, plus or minus sim procedures in the cath lab)
Thursdays: most elective cardioversions are scheduled for this day. I believe this is also a day that is typically heavy in elective cath cases. Rotators are encouraged to participate in both activities. Fellows/attendings see patients all day
Fridays: Heart Failure clinic in the morning. Fellows/attendings typically see patients in the afternoons
There is much flexibility during this rotation to learn what the rotator chooses to learn. The preceptor (Dr. McDivitt) has been transparent with regards to the learner seeking the opportunities which would be most beneficial, such as joining one of the fellows or attendings when they read echos, or asking the echo tech if you could learn from them during the many echos they perform in a given day, or going to the cath lab to practice ultrasound-guided arterial access.
Elective recommendations from prior residents:
ENT - Darryl Miller has POC for ENT coordination - Kyla Casey
EKG Reading Elective - with Dr. Choi (EP Cardiologist); good option while quarantine still in effect and other clinical electives not open - Joe Gehrz
Hyperbarics at UCSD - Eric Koch
OMFS at NMCSD - a lot of standing around but they do let you do all the dental blocks which is helpful - Hof
US guided IVs for one week, great practice and make your own schedule, nurses love it- Ferg
Radiology if you need a mental break
Optho, they have a walk in acute clinic
Palliative Care is a great opportunity to skill build around how to have difficult conversations and identify true goals of care - Victoria Kay (POC: Wang.David@scrippshealth.org)
Regional Anesthesia at Balboa (ok) it would be better at a program with fellowship
EMS/Wilderness medicine elective potential (thanks Dr. D’Andrea for sharing this): There is an externship offered by Hawk Ventures in western North Carolina. It might be a good opportunity for an elective month if/when COVID goes away for those interested in EMS or wilderness medicine. It looks like some of the stuff they do may also counts towards the EMS requirements set forth by the program as well. For more information, you can read about the program here (https://hawkventures.com/externship/) and here (https://hawkventures.com/externship/eligibility/).
Any other elective must be approved by Dr. Auten. If at another facility, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) must be in place or made.
Please contact the ACRs or CDR Auten with any further questions.
