During your PGY-2 year, you will complete a 4 week block fulfilling the EMS requirements set forth by the ACGME for graduation. It is supervised by LCDR Dodson and is intended to be primarily resident driven (as in residents arrange for observation and ride along experiences). About 4 weeks prior to the start of the rotation, you should reach out to LCDR Dodson (dodsonhs@gmail.com). At this point, residents should also start to arrange for ride-alongs and observation shifts at the various EMS/pre-hospital organizations within the county. Follow the EMS Syllabus below for contacts to arrange your shifts with FEDFIRE, Falck, the Coast Guard, and San Diego EMS for ride-alongs, the radio room and dispatch center observation. There are several meetings/conferences to attend over the course of the EMS experience that take place regularly, either weekly or monthly, which are also required to complete the rotation.
Over the course of the rotation, residents will participate in a Command Disaster Drill as well as fulfill a local event medicine requirement (such as plan/participate in Miramar Air Show, Padres' game, Mardi Gras, MCRD Crucible or BUD/S Hell Week, San Diego Rock and Roll Marathon; others are available, but will need approval from the LCDR Dodson prior). The last requirement for the rotation is pre-hospital education for the EMTs, Paramedics, BORSTAR agents or SAR Med Techs about a medical topic or an EBM review of their current protocols; this requirement may be used as an EBM review or lecture later in time if required for graduation benchmarks.
