Promotion (Promo) Boards will take place on Fridays between FEB-JUN every year and are required to advance to the next year. Study materials are generally sent out to the residents after the In-Service Exam is completed at the end of February along with the rough schedule for the next several months of testing.
There have recently been changes to Promo Boards and residents, and interns will go through several procedure stations to assess for procedural competency without a general knowledge assessment as has been the case previously. Ultrasound competency will be assess longitudinally through the year as a part of the ultrasound curriculum.
More information about the dates will be provided later in the year as the schedule is decided. Daily schedules for Promo Boards are released on a rolling basis, usually the week prior to your assigned day, though they typically take place on Friday mornings.
Promo Boards 2022
PGY-2-4 promo boards will be ORAL BOARD style - dates will be in Block 10 and 11 separate email for dates - don’t forget to ask off in medrez and outside rotations.
See below Oral Boards Case Format (PDF file) - we recommend practicing cases in this format with a classmate. You can use made-up cases or the Okuda/Nelson Emergency Medicine Oral Board Review book.
Need a knowledge review of "critical actions"? See this Google Drive link with class-specific notes in powerpoint format. NB: This is NOT an answer key, and the cases you get may not come from these slides. We (the ACRs) do not get any advance notice on the cases. These are notes from the previous style of Promotion Boards, but the general knowledge review might be helpful:

PGY-1 promo boards will be procedure skill signed off weekly this spring during procedure labs.
Procedure lab will be from 12p - 1p in the sim center after SIM days only. We would prefer if all juniors who came to sim stay for the procedure lab, but if you have a conflict, please sign up for another day. For clarity this is the list:
Procedures to review:
Cardiac pacing
Central venous access
Chest tube
Cricothyrotomy
Intubation
Lumbar puncture
Vaginal delivery
Suturing
RESOURCE: https://sites.google.com/view/nmcsd-em-procedures/home?authuser=1 which has the checklists for all the procedures that will be used to test people.
Once the PGY-1s test out of all procedures, they are excused from the procedure lab unless they would like to come for further practice. If they attempt to test out of something during a procedure lab and are unsuccessful, they will need to wait until their next procedure lab to try again.
Please contact the ACRs with any further questions.
