Matthew 20:20-28
On Serving Others
20 Then the mother of Zebedee’s sons came to Jesus with her sons and, kneeling down, asked a favor of him.
21 “What is it you want?” he asked.
She said, “Grant that one of these two sons of mine may sit at your right and the other at your left in your kingdom.”
22 “You don’t know what you are asking,” Jesus said to them. “Can you drink the cup I am going to drink?”
“We can,” they answered.
23 Jesus said to them, “You will indeed drink from my cup, but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared by my Father.”
24 When the ten heard about this, they were indignant with the two brothers. 25 Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 26 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 27 and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— 28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
How many people do you serve each month and help and assist?...
Jesus stated that He came to serve others, not to be served...Jesus challenges us to live lives of love, compassion, and one of serving and loving others...And by saying this one thing, you look at the sentence and think I could do that...But as we look at the world, we are often unkind to others...He does not want us to call each other mean names, promote unkind bumper stickers, wave divisional flags, and a divided word with people telling other people how to live...But whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all...
Jesus is Divine and the Son of God...Jesus defied the worldly norm where those in positions of power expect to be served...He demonstrated that true leadership lies in serving others, regardless of your own status...His Teachings embody love and compassion: Jesus' acts of service, from healing the sick to washing the disciples' feet, were motivated by His immense LOVE for humanity...He prioritized their well-being above His own comfort and safety...
Jesus' lived a life on earth of compassion, LOVE, forgiveness, and helping and serving others...That has to be the Right Way to live, if He did it...He is our Role Model, because if anyone was ever created in the Image of God -it is Jesus...Jesus' teaching critiques the tendency to prioritize our own needs and desires...He encourages us to look beyond ourselves and consider the needs of others...With Jesus' telling us to serve is not just for Himself, but for all His followers...By His example of serving others, He urges His followers to follow His lead and make it a central principle of their lives...
