Mark 15:33-41
The Death of Jesus
33 At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. 34 And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).
35 When some of those standing near heard this, they said, “Listen, he’s calling Elijah.”
36 Someone ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar, put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to take him down,” he said.
37 With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last.
38 The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. 39 And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Jesus, saw how he died, he said, “Surely this man was the Son of God!”
40 Some women were watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joseph, and Salome. 41 In Galilee these women had followed him and cared for his needs. Many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem were also there.
When one loses a best friend, the world seems to stop...The world seems that something is missing and of course something is...The world now feels like something is gone and you can't get it back...A part of you feels gone...
When Jesus died and finally said, "My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?", those close to Him must have wept...No doubt His Disciples had feelings of deep emotion...Now some Disciples may not have been with Him at the time of His death, but I have no doubt that Peter and the other Disciples felt empty and lost after their Friend’s graphic death on the cross...The One who had been with them and had taught them so much, was now gone from the earth and He had left them...The Disciples were now absent of their Teacher...The world was now absent of our Messiah...Jesus had left this world...He was now gone...Grief and tears would be the common thoughts among those who loved Him...How empty those close to Him must have felt right after His death...The thoughts of death, of His finality, overwhelming thoughts of mourning, and this complete loneliness would surround the Disciples on this day...With their emotions completely spent and completely exhausted, this empty hollowness would linger in their thoughts...
Grieving is like this makes one feel almost detached from reality...It is a very lost lonely feeling...Good Friday was and is an emotional day...Hope died that day on the cross...
Good Friday is not the end of this Story...
