Mark 15:16-20
The Soldiers Mock Jesus
16The soldiers led Jesus away into the palace (that is, the Praetorium) and called together the whole company of soldiers. 17They put a purple robe on him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on him. 18And they began to call out to him, "Hail, king of the Jews!" 19Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Falling on their knees, they paid homage to him. 20And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out to crucify him.
The soldiers take Jesus after Pilate sentences Him to be crucified...They taunted and mocked Him because they thought He was powerless...They may have thought this was a funny, because He said He was King of the Jews...They put a purple robe on Him and twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on Him...They said hail to the King of the Jews...The struck Him and spit on Him...And when they mocked Him, they took off His purple robe and put His own clothes on Him...Then they led Him off to be crucified...
The cross, suffering and shame are tied together...Death on a cross was for criminals and slaves, who were not Roman citizens...By our own sins we led to this suffering and shame on His cross...We and our sins would kill Him...He forgives us...His grace now redeems us...
