Mark 14:12-26
Jesus' Last Supper
12 On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, when it was customary to sacrifice the Passover lamb, Jesus’ disciples asked him, “Where do you want us to go and make preparations for you to eat the Passover?”
13 So he sent two of his disciples, telling them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him. 14 Say to the owner of the house he enters, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 15 He will show you a large room upstairs, furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there.”
16 The disciples left, went into the city and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover.
17 When evening came, Jesus arrived with the Twelve. 18 While they were reclining at the table eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me—one who is eating with me.”
19 They were saddened, and one by one they said to him, “Surely you don’t mean me?”
20 “It is one of the Twelve,” he replied, “one who dips bread into the bowl with me. 21 The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”
22 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take it; this is my body.”
23 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it.
24 “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many,” he said to them. 25 “Truly I tell you, I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”
26 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
In the Old Testament the Passover feast was an especially holy event for the Jewish people...Passover was when God had spared His people from the all the plagues...He also saved them from a physical death and brought them out of slavery from Egypt...God is His last plague would pass over the land of Egypt, and kill the firstborn of both humans and animals...Only the Hebrew children would be allowed to survive this plague...After all the plagues of God, His people were saved...
The Disciples were with Jesus at His Last Supper...With Jesus' Last Supper His followers are all brought together for us to learn from and observe from His las meal...As Jesus at at the Passover feast, He teaches two symbols that will forever remind us of Him...A drink and what we eat each meal will forever be remembered, from His Last Supper...Jesus took a cup of wine to drink, He gave thanks and said, "Take this and divide it among you...For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.’...And He took some bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, ‘This is My body given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.’...In the same way, after the supper He took the cup, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is poured out for you."...
During the Last Supper with His apostles, Jesus took the two symbols of drink and our daily bread is associated with His Last Supper and His Last Passover...Jesus' sacrifice on the cross gave to His Disciples a new meaning...His sacrifice, which would save us from spiritual death and delivers us from spiritual bondage: “After taking the cup, He gave thanks and said, ‘Take this and divide it among you...For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.’...Jesus had taught His followers that He gives a drink that satisfies all things, everyone who drinks an earthly drink will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the drink that He gives and brings us, we will never thirst again...Indeed, the drink that He gives His followers will become in them a spring of water welling up to an eternal life...
The Disciples had heard Jesus call Himself, the Bread of Life...And in His last meal, His Last Supper, Jesus took the bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, ‘This is My body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.’...And in this way we have an eternal way to remember Jesus, and in the same way, after the supper He took the cup, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is poured out for you’.”...
Like the original Passover feast being a saving time for the Israeli's people, the LORD's Supper reminds us of the life and work of Jesus, and it marks us as His people of His new covenant...His Last Supper is a more glorious and final feast....A feast that the last sacrifice was forever done...The Perfect Man was sacrificed for mankind's sins...The time of sacrifices was over, after His death on the cross...Jesus had taken on the entire earth's sins with His death on the cross...His last meal serves as a taste of what is to come for all believers—a taste of an abundant life with Him and His Father...And we are to remember Him when we drink and eat...As Jesus says, "Do this in remembrance of Me."...
Jesus' followers asked Him and were taught this: “What sign then will You give that we may see it and believe You?...What will You do?...Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’”...Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is My Father who gives you the True Bread from heaven...For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”...“Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.”...Then Jesus declared, "I AM the Bread of Life."..."Whoever comes to Me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in Me will never be thirsty...But as I told you, you have seen Me and still you do not believe...All those the Father gives Me will come to Me, and whoever comes to Me will never be driven away."...
For Jesus had came down from heaven not to do His will but to do the will of God who sent Him...And this is the will of God who sent His Son, that Jesus shall lose none of all those God has given Him...And Jesus will raise us up on the last day...For it is God's will that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life, and He who believes will be raised up on their last day...
