Mark 12:38-40
Warning Against the Teachers of the Law
38 As he taught, Jesus said, “Watch out for the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, 39 and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets. 40 They devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished most severely.”
Jesus teaches about arrogance and those who have the most importance seats and those that are greeted with respect...There are some people who want to have others see them as distinct and with some fame...When sin tries to hide among religion and in the synagogues and misrepresent the teachings of God and His Son, there will be punishment...We must be aware of those who dress nicely and love to go into situations and places, where they feel they will be important or are deemed important, and/or want to feel important...We must be aware of those people who try to get an audience or audiences for the wrong reasons...Jesus adds there will be punishment, for them, and it will be severe...
When we, as well as the teachers of the law, read and learn the Scripture, we find out that Jesus is LORD...Jesus is one of the reasons the entire Bible is written...Thomas after Jesus' resurrection and after touching His glorious wounds, calls His Master, my LORD and my GOD...Jesus had earlier told Thomas (and His other disciples) that He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life...Jesus is LORD...So the Scriptures and His disciples teach that Jesus is LORD and the Messiah...However, the teachers of the law did not believe what is written...They oppose the correct teachings about the Truth, and their doom will be doubled...
