Mark 14:32-42
Gethsemane
32 They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 He took Peter, James and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. 34 “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,” he said to them. “Stay here and keep watch.”
35 Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him. 36 “Abba, Father,” he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”
37 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon, ”he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour? 38 Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
39 Once more he went away and prayed the same thing. 40 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him.
41 Returning the third time, he said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. 42 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”
When we look at Jesus and His Disciples on the night of Gethsemane many things are happening...This is the night that He would be betrayed, and then He would be arrested...He later would be sentenced to death...Then later He would be crucified...And Jesus knows these things are about to happen...
One thing that is happening in the night of all this anxiety is that Jesus' Disciples are very sleepy...But Jesus is very anxious...He knows what is soon to happen...So, another thing happening, Jesus is overwhelmed with sorrow almost to the point of death...Jesus asks His Father if there is another way...There is not and Jesus will follow God's Will to the cross...
Jesus wants His Disciples to stay awake and be with Him...He wants His Disciples support...But twice after He goes and prays, His Disciples fall asleep...Now Jesus has asked them twice to keep watch and stay awake with Him, but they do not follow His instructions...The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak...So His Disciples cannot follow His advice on that heavily emotional night of His...
Returning the third time, He said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting?...Enough!...The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners...
When one is under stress, things happen...Especially, when One is under heavy, deathly type stress they change (we change under stress)...And often when one is anxious, they yell out to one or those who do not follow their instructions...
After Jesus' Disciples failed to follow what He asks them to do three times, Jesus did not yell out at them, chastise them, or make them feel guilty...Jesus simply says, "Rise!...Let us go!...Here comes My betrayer!"...Jesus is Loving and Gracious, even in His own and most anxious of times...
