Mark 12:18-27
God is the Living God and There is a Resurrection
18 Then the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him with a question. 19 "Teacher," they said, "Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man must marry the widow and have children for his brother. 20 Now there were seven brothers. The first one married and died without leaving any children. 21 The second one married the widow, but he also died, leaving no child. It was the same with the third. 22 In fact, none of the seven left any children. Last of all, the woman died too. 23 At the resurrection whose wife will she be, since the seven were married to her?"
24 Jesus replied, "Are you not in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God? 25 When the dead rise, they will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven. 26 Now about the dead rising—have you not read in the book of Moses, in the account of the bush, how God said to him, 'I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'? 27 He is not the God of the dead, but of the living. You are badly mistaken!"
John 17:3
Now this is Eternal Life
3 Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.
Jesus in these verses talks about the dead rising and thus teaching us that there will be a resurrection...He explains to the Sadducees (who do not believe in a resurrection of the dead) who have asked Him about a woman who has married seven times...Jesus tells the Sadducees they do not know the Scriptures and that they are in error about both the Scripture and the Power of God...Then Jesus says, "Now about the dead rising—have you not read in the book of Moses, in the account of the bush, how God said to him, 'I AM the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'?...He is not the God of the dead, but of the living...You are badly mistaken!"...
So God is alive today, as He was in the time of Jesus...And when Jesus talks to the Sadducees here He brings us the resurrection of people after we have died...Jesus says "when the dead rise", so we do rise after we are dead...There is a resurrection for us...We can live again, with the Living God...Let us praise God that we rise again and can have eternal life with God and His Son...And Jesus says this is eternal life, that we may know God, the Only True God, and Jesus Christ, the One whom God had sent to earth to dwell among us...
I find this story one of the most interesting in the Bible, that Jesus knows that we will not necessarily be with our spouses in heaven, but that we will love them...When we resurrect and rise to heaven, we will no longer be married or as He says, "When the dead rise, they will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven."...What an answer for the Sadducees and for us...
