Bab al Murad, Abu Ja'far al Thani al Imam Muhammad ibn Ali al Taqi Jawad al A'immah AS
1 Hear us, Shepherd of Israel, you who lead Joseph like a flock. You who sit enthroned between the cherubim, shine forth 2 before Ephraim, Benjamin and Manasseh. Awaken your might; come and save us. 3 Restore us, O God; make your face shine on us, that we may be saved.
Al-Fazl wrote to him-asws, informing him-asws that the people are faulting that (wearing brocade) upon him-asws. He-asws wrote: ‘O Fazl! Don’t you know that Yusuf-asws was wearing brocade interlaced with gold, and he-as was sitting upon the chairs of gold. It did not break anything of his-as wisdom. And like that was Suleyman’. Then he-asws instructed for expensive perfume to be made for him-asws, for four thousand Dirhams’.
4 How long, Lord God Almighty, will your anger smolder against the prayers of your people? 5 You have fed them with the bread of tears; you have made them drink tears by the bowlful. 6 You have made us an object of derision to our neighbors, and our enemies mock us. 7 Restore us, God Almighty; make your face shine on us, that we may be saved.
‘Al-Mamoun deployed every trick upon Abu Ja’far-asws, but he was not able with anything regarding him-asws. When he fell sick and wanted to build upon him-asws (for) his daughter, he handed one hundred maids, as beautiful as can be, to each one of them was a goblet wherein were jewels to receive Abu Ja’far-asws when he-asws sits in the place of the fraternity (company). But he-asws did not even turn to them. And there was a man called Mukhariq, master of voice (singer), and the lute and striking the drums, long beard. Al-Mamoun summoned him. He said, ‘O commander of the faithful! If it was something from the matters of the world, I shall suffice you of his-asws matter’. He had him seated in front of Abu Ja’far-asws. Mukhariq uttered loud utterances, the people of the house gathered to him, and he went on to strike his lute and singing. When he had done so for a while, and there was Abu Ja’far-asws not turning to him, neither right nor left. Then he-asws raised his-asws head towards him and said: ‘Fear Allah-azwj, O one with a goat’s beard!
8 You transplanted a vine from Egypt; you drove out the nations and planted it. 9 You cleared the ground for it, and it took root and filled the land. 10 The mountains were covered with its shade, the mighty cedars with its branches. 11 Its branches reached as far as the Sea, 12 Why have you broken down its walls so that all who pass by pick its grapes? 13 Boars from the forest ravage it, and insects from the fields feed on it.
Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Safwan ibn Yahya who has said the following. “Once I said to al-Rida (a.s), before Allah’s granting you the blessing of the birth of abu Ja’far (a.s) we would ask you and you would say, “Allah will grant me a son and He has granted you one. His birth is the delight of our eyes. May Allah spare us from showing your (sad) day. However, if something will happen to who then (will leadership with Divine Authority) will go?” The Imam (a.s) pointed out with his hand towards abu Ja’far (a.s) and he was standing before him. I then asked, “ May Allah take my soul in service for your cause, a child of three years?” The Imam (a.s) said, “That will be of no harm to him. Jesus rose with Divine authority when he was a three years old child.”
14 Return to us, God Almighty! Look down from heaven and see! Watch over this vine, 15 the root your right hand has planted, the son (branch) you have raised up for yourself.
It is My promise that I will delight his eyes with his son Muhammad; the caliph after him and the heir of his knowledge. He is the vessel of My knowledge, the trustee of My secret and My proof and authority before My people. I have made Paradise as his abode and have accepted his intercession for seventy thousand ones of his relatives, who all deserve to be in Hell.
16 Your vine is cut down, it is burned with fire; at your rebuke your people perish. 17 Let your hand rest on the man at your right hand, the son of man you have raised up for yourself.
Narrated to us Saqr bin Abi Dulf that: I heard Aba Ja’far Muhammad bin Ali ar-Reza (a.s.) say: “The Imam after me is my son, Ali. His command is command of his father and his statement is statement of his father and his obedience is obedience of his father. Then the Imam fell silent. Then he said: The Imam after him will be his son, Hasan. His command is command of his father and his statement is statement of his father and his obedience is obedience of his father. After this Imam (a.s.) became silent. The narrator asked: ‘O son of Allah’s Messenger, who will be the Imam after Hasan?’ Imam (a.s.) started weeping profusely and said: ‘After him, his son Qaim (a.t.f.s.) will be the Imam’. He will be in Ghaibat and pious and sincere people will await his reappearance while those in doubt will deny him and will ridicule his remembrance (zikr). Those who will hasten will be destroyed and those who submit will be successful.”
18 Then we will not turn away from you; revive us, and we will call on your name. 19 Restore us, Lord God Almighty; make your face shine on us, that we may be saved.
It is related in the book, Dala’il al-Imamah of al-Tabari from Zakariyyah b. Adam who says that, “One day, I was in the presence of Imam ‘Ali al-Ridha when his son, Imam Muhammad al-Jawad, who was less than four years old, was brought to him. When he was brought in, he struck his palms upon the ground and raised his head towards the heavens and remained engrossed in deep thought for a long time. Seeing this, Imam al-Ridha asked him, ‘May I be your ransom! What are you thinking about?’ Imam al-Jawad replied, ‘I am engrossed in thought regarding the sufferings that befell my mother, Fatimah. By Allah! I will bring out those two men from their graves and burn them and then scatter their ashes into the seas.’ Hearing this, Imam al-Ridha asked his son to be brought closer to him and then he kissed him on his forehead and said, ‘May my parents be your ransom! You are worthy for this affair (Imamat).’”
