Abu Abdillah (AS), Sayyid Shabab Ahlil Jannah, al Imam al Husayn AS Shaheed al Shuhada'
1 O God, why have you rejected us forever? Why does your anger smolder against the sheep of your pasture? 2 Remember the nation you purchased long ago, the people of your inheritance, whom you redeemed— Mount Zion, where you dwelt.
It is related that (excessive) fighting had tired Imam Husayn (a.s.) and he paused for sometime to rest. At that moment a stone was flung at his forehead and he lifted the front part of his dress to clean it (the blood), when a poisoned three-pronged arrow came towards him piercing his chest. In some narratives it is stated that it pierced his heart and he said, “In the name of Allah! And by Allah! And upon the custom of the Prophet of Allah (S)”! Then he lifted his head towards the heavens and said, “O Lord! You know that they have resolved to kill the one besides whom there is no other son of the Prophet upon this earth”.
3 Turn your steps toward these everlasting ruins, all this destruction the enemy has brought on the sanctuary. 4 Your foes roared in the place where you met with us; they set up their standards as signs. 5 They behaved like men wielding axes to cut through a thicket of trees. 6 They smashed all the carved paneling with their axes and hatchets.
So when they saw you firm, fearless, and courageous, they set up their most malicious deceptions against you, and fought you with their deceit and viciousness. The accursed one (Umar Ibn Sa’d) commanded his soldiers, and thus, they prevented you from reaching or receiving water. They rushed to engage you in combat, descended swiftly upon you, showering you with arrows and stones, and moving towards you with uprooting hands. Neither they respected your rights, nor were they mindful of retribution for slaying you and your companions, and plundering your belongings. You were in the front line of the storm (of battle), enduring afflictions. Indeed, the angels of the heavens were astonished by your patience. The enemy then surrounded you from all sides, weakened you by inflicting wounds, prevented you from taking any repose, and you had no helper remaining. You were bereaved yet patient, defending your women and children, until they caused you to fall from your horse. You fell to the ground, wounded, horses trampled you with their hooves, tyrants raised their swords against you,
7 They burned your sanctuary to the ground; they defiled the dwelling place of your Name. 8 They said in their hearts, “We will crush them completely!” They burned every place where God was worshiped in the land.
Imam Zain al-Abidin (peace be upon him) said: “By God, I did not look at my aunts and sisters except that the grief suffocated me, and I remembered their fleeing from tent to tent, and from tent to tent, and the herald of the people calls: Burn the houses of the wrongdoers.”
I say: verses 3-8 can also apply to the martydom of Fatima al Zahra’ SA and Allahu Aalam
9 We are given no signs from God; no prophets are left, and none of us knows how long this will be. 10 How long will the enemy mock you, God? Will the foe revile your name forever? 11 Why do you hold back your hand, your right hand? Take it from the folds of your garment and destroy them!
Imam Husayn AS says:
“Then if you doubt this, do you even doubt that I am the grandson of the Prophet of Allah (S)? By Allah! There is no other grandson of the Prophet in the east or the west except myself from among yourselves or anyone else. Woe be to you! Have I killed anyone from among you whose revenge you desire? Or have I usurped the wealth of anyone or hurt anyone whose retribution you desire from me”?
12 But God is my King from long ago; he brings salvation on the earth. 13 It was you who split open the sea by your power; you broke the heads of the monster in the waters. 14 It was you who crushed the heads of Leviathan and gave it as food to the creatures of the desert. 15 It was you who opened up springs and streams; you dried up the ever-flowing rivers. 16 The day is yours, and yours also the night; you established the sun and moon. 17 It was you who set all the boundaries of the earth; you made both summer and winter.
Hameed bin Muslim says that Imam Husayn (a.s.) had worn a fur cloak and a turban upon his head, while his hair was dyed with Wasmah. I heard him say, before he was martyred, when he was on foot but fought as if he was mounted, and defended himself from the arrows, while the cavalry were split from all sides and he attacked them with sword, _“You conspire together against me? By Allah! After me you shall not kill anyone else by whose murder Allah would have been more wrathful towards you. By Allah! I desire that Allah cherish me in lieu of this contempt of yours’. And He may take my revenge from you through means of which you are unaware. Beware! By Allah! If you kill me, Allah too shall kill you and shed your blood. Then He shall not lift His Hands off you until He doubles the grievous punishment”.
18 Remember how the enemy has mocked you, Lord, how foolish people have reviled your name. 19 Do not hand over the life of your dove to wild beasts; do not forget the lives of your afflicted people forever. 20 Have regard for your covenant, because haunts of violence fill the dark places of the land.
Furthermore it is related that when Imam Husayn (a.s.) intended going towards Iraq, he stood up and delivered the following sermon: “Praise be to Allah! By Allah’s will only! There is no power but with Allah! And Blessings of Allah be upon His Messenger! Verily death is bound with the sons of Adam as a necklace around the neck of a maiden. How I desire and long to meet my Ancestors similar to (Prophet) Ya’qoob (a.s.), who was desirous of meeting (Prophet) Yusuf (a.s.). Verily I proceed towards the place of my martyrdom, which has been selected for me. It is as if I see the wolves of the desert (of Bani Umayyah) separating each part of my body between Nawawees and Karbala, and filling their empty bellies and utricles. There is no escape from that which has been written down by the pen of destiny, and the pleasure of our Household (Ahlul Bayt) lies in the pleasure of Allah. Verily we will endure His trials and secure the reward due for the forbearing ones. The cord of the Prophet (S) and his child cannot be separated from him, but will all be united together with him near the Right (Allah). Thereby his (the Prophet’s) eyes will be cooled due to us and thus Allah will fulfill what He has promised through them. Then whoever desires to lay down his life for us and strive in the way of Allah, should come out with us, for I shall be leaving tomorrow morning, Allah willing.”_
21 Do not let the oppressed retreat in disgrace; may the poor and needy praise your name. 22 Rise up, O God, and defend your cause; remember how fools mock you all day long. 23 Do not ignore the clamor of your adversaries, the uproar of your enemies, which rises continually.
Ahmad ibn Muhammad has narrated from Muhammad ibn al-Hassan from Muhammad ibn ‘Isa ibn ‘Ubayd from Ali ibn Asbat from Sayf ibn ‘Amira from Muhammad ibn humran who has said the following. “Abu ‘Abdallah (a.s) has said, ‘When all that happened to al-Husayn had happened, the angels wept and cried before Allah and said, “How such thing would happen to al-Husayn Your chosen one and the grand son of Your Prophet?” The Imam (a.s) has said that Allah then showed to them the shadow of Al-Qa’im (the one who will rise with Divine Authority) and said, “Through him I will take My revenge.”
I say: By Allah we are Negligent of the right of Imam al-Hussein AS, had we done more we would’ve found a Narration for each verse, or even line! But this is all I can do for the shortage of time. There is neither power nor strength except with Allah, the Most High the Most Mighty
