"Peabody's Improbable History" featured a genius talking dog named Mister Peabody who has a pet human boy named Sherman. Peabody and Sherman use Peabody's "WABAC machine" (pronounced "way-back", spelled WAYBAC in season 1, (and partially a play on words of the names of early computers such as UNIVAC and ENIAC) to go back in time to discover the real story behind historical events, and in many cases, intervene with uncooperative historical figures to ensure that events transpire as history has recorded. The term "Wayback Machine" is used to this day in Internet applications such as Wikipedia and the Internet Archive to refer to the ability to see or revert to older content.

We are going to use the concept of "The Wayback Machine" to try to dig up some old memories of our earlier days. I know not everyone was as crazy about music as some of us were. To me every song of those days takes me back to boy-girl spin-the-bottle kissing game, Carter's Skateland, Bradley's Cafeteria, or sitting at a lookout on a moonlight night up on Monte Sano Mountain.

So, as we have done a little in the past, I am going to ask Mr. Peabody (a.k.a. Amazon Alexa) to play me a song from those days and collect your thoughts about the song. As a second part of this week's participation, I am asking you where we first encountered Mr. Peabody and Sherman.

So...Mr. Peabody, take us wayback. What is the first song you will play?

"It's Now or Never" is a song recorded by Elvis Presley and released as a single in 1960. The song is one of the best-selling singles by Presley (20 million copies), and one of the best-selling physical singles of all time. In 1960, "It's Now or Never" was a number-one record in the U.S. for Elvis Presley, spending five weeks at number one in the UK, where it spent eight weeks at the top in 1960 and an additional week at number one in 2005 as a re-issue, and numerous other countries, selling in excess of 20 million physical copies worldwide, Elvis Presley's biggest international single ever.

"It's Now or Never" is one of two popular songs based on the Italian song of the Neapolitan language, "'O Sole mio" (music by Eduardo di Capua); the other being "There's No Tomorrow", recorded by U.S. singer Tony Martin in 1949, which inspired Presley's version.

Editor's Thoughts: This wayback song drops me right in the middle of Carter's Skateland. 1960 was one of my favorite years. I would go skating three to four times a week and even though I was shy, I skated with a lot of beautiful girls. This was normally a "couples only" song and it was always a contest to see who I could get to skate with me. I can't name them all, but vividly remember skating with Carol Jean Williams, Barbara Seeley, Pam Grooms, Ginger Cagle, Dianne Hughey, and Carolyn McCutcheon. The song did not make it to the dances at Bradley's I don't believe. Those dances were more rock and roll with very few slow songs to cuddle up with someone. Give us your comments about what this song fit into your past.

Still recovering and as Inspector Clouseau says, "in every day and in every way I am getting better and better." Still on some loopy medicine and will still be doing IV drips until Friday to fight off infections.

Knology is still rejecting my emails to those who use their service. Just go to www.leeestraveller.com and work your way to the current edition there.

CARRABBA’S ITALIAN GRILL

THURSDAY, APRIL 20, 2023

11:00 AM

Please save the date for our spring lunch and chat time for the beginning of the thirteenth year for Lee Lunch Bunch for the classes of ‘64, ‘65, and ‘66.

Carrabba’s is located on the upper parking level of Parkway Place Mall in Huntsville. We have reserved a limited space area for our group, so please do let me know asap if you will be coming. Most of the time in the past we have met on the last Thursday of April. That was not available this time, so it will be on the third Thursday of April instead. As always, place and space are issues, but we should have enough space at this restaurant for our group.

Please do let me know if you plan to be there.
