Reports Greatly Exaggerated!

Tommy Towery

LHS'64

"The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated" is a popular misquote attributed to author Samuel Clemens, known by his pen name, Mark Twain. The humorous quote is based on a letter Twain sent to a newspaper reporter who had asked Twain about rumors that he was dying.

In the same tone, the report that the recent reunion sponsored by the Classes of '64 - '65 - '66 (aided and attended by the Class of '67 and other classes) was going to be the last reunion of these classes was also exaggerated. It is true that such a statement might have been posted in The Traveller early in the planning dates, but it turned out to be made by someone who did not have the support of the entire group.

In the recent meeting of the past reunion committee, the group unanimously voted to not only hold another reunion but to schedule future meetings to begin working on it.

The committee not only decided to host a future reunion but set the date to do so on September 28, 2024. Historically the combined reunions have been held on the reunion dates for the Class of '65, but it was voted this time to have it on the year marking the 60th year of the Class of '64.

Though there is a lot of work to be done in the future, it was discussed and agreed that plans should be made to hold the next reunion at a local hotel in the same way that previous reunions were planned. The cost might be a little more, but all efforts will be made to keep it within reason.

As was done at the last reunion all classes from Lee are invited, with a special emphasis on the Lee classes graduating in the Sixties ('64-'69). Also, please remember that any classmates who may have been in one of those classes sometime but for some reason did not graduate with the rest of the class are still considered to be a part of them. This includes those who left early for military service or financial reasons or whose parents may have been transferred or moved away from Huntsville before they graduated. Once a General...always a General.

To assist the committee, I have included a brief questionnaire below to determine why some of you may not have attended this most recent one. your name will not be collected but your reasons would help us better understand what needs to be done in the future to increase participation.

The Traveller announcement goes out to 319 people each week. I don't know how many folks actually read it or just move it to the trash, but I would like to ask those of you who did not attend the reunion (and that is a lot) to take one minute and respond to the survey above. Your name will not be recorded but it will greatly assist the reunion committee in making future plans. If you never want to hear from us again, then use the comment option below to let us know.

Below is a video of all the pictures I took during the reunion. It is a six-and-a-half-minute video. Pardon the soundtrack, but Youtube gets picky about people using copyrighted music and so I had to use some public domain songs for the musical background. I know Jim McBride appreciates that. Anyway, here are the slides, and if a particular one is one you want then look at the time of the slide and let me know and I will send you a good copy of it. Anyway, enjoy!

This Week's Questions, Answers, Comments

Bryan Towery. LHS ‘66, "To John Scales - Truly appreciate the update on Frank Sliz. Also saddened by the news of his passing. Although not a close friend, I knew him well from the years we spent together in the Lee Band. I left the Huntsville area in early '68 and regret that I lost contact with many, many friends from East Clinton and Lee over the years since."

Diane Hughey McClure, LHS '64, "Due to unexpected circumstances that came up at the last minute I was unable to attend the reunion. I was very disappointed and hope I will have better luck attending the next one. Looking forward to seeing everyone in the not-to-distant future.  "

A Final Song to Remember Our Reunion

"It's Over" - Elvis Presley

One final "Reunion Song" and then we will move on to newer times. When I was thinking about ending songs, this one came to me. Although it is not specifically "reunion" connected, it is a fit "ending" song.
