How I Was Able to Finally Graduate College

 Linda Brown Mann

LHS' 1965

My trip to a college degree is a long and winding road. Like most people,  I took my ACT test and had good enough grades to go to UAH for a short while. I did not finish because I was unable to continue to pay the high tuition.

Instead, I got a job on Arsenal with the Department of Defense (DOD) and and after 1978 rolled around I finally found I could pay tuition to go to Calhoun. At the time it was $70 a quarter. So, I went to college at night and worked 40 hour a week.  I graduated from Calhoun in 1978.

Next, I enrolled at Athens College and again worked during the day and went at night taking four courses a quarter and made the Deans List one time. I earned my BSBA in 1980. Throughout, I paid for all of it myself except the DOD paid one quarter.

Tuition is so much higher now, I would not be able to do it myself.

Memphis, TN -  Thanks to those of you who have sent me stories about your college choices after high school graduation. I have received several and hope that many more of you will consider sharing your own story with your classmates and other readers.

In an effort to be fair, I will publish the stories in the order they were received, so please be patient if you are one of those individuals.

Watched too many ballgames on TV today, so I have had to cut this issue a little short. If you sent something in I will get to it next week hopefully.

I was so surprised no one responded to Max Kull's wheeler dealer article. Looked like there were going to be some good stories come from it.Thanks for trying Max.
