Lee Lunch Bunch

Holds First Get Together for 2014

The Lee Lunch Bunch met on January 9th at Logan's Roadhouse and approximately 24 classmates got together to visit and share some memories. Since not all of you readers use Facebook, below are the 12 photos that were taken by Linda Taylor, Class of '64.

Unfortunately no one submitted a story nor identification of all the people in the pictures, but we thought you would enjoy seeing them anyway. If you have any specific questions then please email them to me and we will try to get the answers.

Memphis, TN - I'm sorry I missed the get together but from what I hear those who did attend enjoyed themselves. As soon as we get the date for the next scheduled one we will let you know so you can start making plans.

I think something was missing in relation to the story of the Orange Bowl trip. During that event Sherman Banks had left his paper route in my hands to ensure that all his customers were well cared for in his absence. I had my own route to look after as well. It ranged from just above the intersection of California at Govenors , up Govenors Dr. to the last residence below the overlook and back down, including side streets, then up and back on Big Cove Rd. 140 customers or there abouts. Enough to give you a good workout on a motorbike. Sherman's route was off to the east of California on the connector streets back from the creek near Govenors but south of the cemetery. But the weekend Sherman was out of town along with the rest of the Lee High Band, I had his additional 120 customers to deliver. Not really a problem for short term under normal conditions. That weekend, though, turned out to be a lot different...a lot different in Huntsville! We got a load of snow about 20" deep. I think it all started with a light rain, then turned COLD, then the rain changed to snow, accumulating as deep wet snow. At first it wasn't so bad. I was finished with my deliveries, and was starting his route. The snow flakes got bigger, and more started coming down.  After a little bit I began fighting the ruts left by passing cars.  Next the ruts disappeared and I was skidding all over even with knobby tires. Then the snow became so deep i couldn't hardly go at all. Trying to move along the street with fifty pounds of newspapers slung around my neck was turning into a lot of work, and becoming impossible to go any further. Then a bright idea came into my head. I knocked on one of the customer's door, and asked to use the phone. I called my dad. He had a VW beetle. We all knew a bug could go anywhere, at least by what the ads said. A little while later he shows up. Its starting to get dark and the cold is settling into my hands and feet and down my neck with the melted snow. We go about a half a block in that bug, and he is getting stuck. We gave up and went home. I still had about a third of the papers left to deliver. What a soggy cold day and evening, all the while Sherman and his band are relishing the warmth of Miami with all the fun leading up to the Orange Bowl performance. About the time we get in the door up on Maysville Rd. the phone starts ringing. "Where did you throw my newspaper?" We probably had 3 or 4 calls at least. Folks wanted their newspaper. So goes the world. Now newspaper companies are going out of business because folks have stopped reading them.

Thanks so much for all you do to keep us informed. I greatly enjoyed the Orange Bowl article as I either didn’t see it 10 years ago or have just forgotten. Thanks to Rainer for writing it as well. You help make my Sunday mornings bright.

Blessings to all the Fam-I-Lee for a safe and healthy 2014.
