Nancy Ann Taylor Sherrod

December 10, 1945 - August 30, 2014
Nancy Ann Sherrod passed away on August 30, 2014 after her courageous battle with cancer.
She was the daughter of the late Dr. Ned and Ruth Ash of Alabama. She was also the beloved wife of Mack Sherrod of Austin for over 27 years. Nancy was a graduate student of CUNA and took great pride in her career. She worked for Texas DPS Credit Union for 30 years, where she started as a teller and retired as Vice President of Loans in 2008. During her years of service at DPS Credit Union she made countless number of friends in law enforcement, local politics, and the banking industry. She considered all of these friends as her extended family. Nancy enjoyed volunteering and was an avid Alabama and Texas football fan. She enjoyed spending time with her family and was affectionately known as Nana to her 13 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Family was the most important thing to Nancy.
She is survived by her husband Mack Sherrod of Austin, her brother Lamar Taylor and wife Brenda of Huntsville Alabama, daughter Jamie Scoggins and husband Wayne of Round Rock, her daughter Jennifer Lumpkins and husband David of Round Rock, daughter Tami Lewright and husband Joe of Austin, son Tim Sherrod and wife Emilie of Rockwall, daughter Sherry Newman and husband Ted of Pflugerville. Her Grandchildren are Josh Anderson, Brittney and Ashley Scoggins, Courtney and DJ Lumpkins, Jade, Joseph, Jack and Janzen Lewright, Tate and Ty Sherrod, Wyatt and Ella Newman. She also leaves behind other numerous loving relatives throughout the states.
We will have a Memorial Service in her honor at Becks Funeral Home at 1700 E FM 1431, Cedar Park Texas on September 13, 2014 at 10:00 am. Private burial for immediate family will be held afterwards.

Memphis, TN - I spent most of the week working on reunion stuff, but I have enjoyed my tasks. I am still uncertain why many of you have declined our invitations to celebrate this milestone with the rest of your classmates, especially those of you in the local area.
I guess what I fail to understand (or maybe accept is a better choice of words) is what keeps so many of you from from wanting to be with the people you shared so many things with. When you look back at the number of classmates we lose each year, it makes it even more difficult to comprehend.
There is still time to register. If you are not comfortable with the sit down dinner and program (which is going to be one for the books) then why not at least come out to the Friday night social and at least say hello to the rest of us. If the cost is a problem, then some of us are willing to help. Just let us know.
I I have one serious question to ask you. If we all were going to meet in a dark room and everyone had to wear blindfolds, but we could still talk and visit, would you come? If you said "yes", then I feel sorry for you, if you let your vanity keep you away from friends who would like to visit with you.
Jane R. Parks Memorial Grant

The Master Gardeners of North Alabama grant committee oversee the Jane R Parks Memorial Grant for existing horticulture and educational projects in Madison County. This grant was set up by Master Gardener Jane Parks' family in her memory. The committee sends out info to the newspapers, schools and nonprofits organizations in August to give them info about the grant and how to apply for one. When the applications come in we decide on which projects will be awarded a grant and then give the checks out at the MG Christmas social. It is very rewarding to be on this committee and give away grant money for qualified projects. This year we are going to arrange a field trip to one of this year's winners.

Fess Elisha Parker was an American film and TV actor best known for his portrayals of Davy Crockett in the Walt Disney 1955-1956 mini-series and as TV's Daniel Boone from 1964 to 1970. He later was known as a wine-maker and resort owner-operator. The Fess Parker Winery is located along the famous Foxen Canyon Wine Trail.
Christian Ludol Ebsen, Jr., known as Buddy Ebsen, was born in 1908. His father operated a dance studio in Orlando, Florida. In 1928 he and his sister Vilma took their talents to New York City as a dancing team. A performer for seven decades, Buddy Ebsen began his career as a hoofer, singing and dancing on the stages of Vaudeville and Broadway. He tapped with Shirley Temple in the film "Captain January" and with Judy Garland in "Broadway Melodies of 1938." He was originally cast as The Tin Man in 1939's "The Wizard of Oz," but developed a severe allergic reaction to aluminum makeup. Jack Haley, Jr. replaced him in the famous role. Ray Bolger played The Scarecrow. Trivia Question: What actor played The Cowardly Lion?
Buddy Ebsen was best known to our generation as George Russell, sidekick to Fess Parker's Davy Crockett, and as Jed Clampett, patriarch of "The Beverly Hillbillies" clan, which ran for nine years on CBS, from 1962 to 1971. He later starred as the white-haired Barnaby Jones, probably the only TV detective in history who played the role while on Medicare.
Few remember his role as Audrey Hepburn's jilted husband in "Breakfast at Tiffany's". Buddy Ebsen died in 2003, at the age of 95.

Subject: US Memorial Ship LST 325

The working US memorial ship LST 325 is in Decatur until Wednesday, September 10, 2014. (The LST’s were the military’s cargo ships, delivering tons of tanks, jeeps, supplies and troops directly to enemy shorelines. The 325 made a total of 44 landings on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day. Rescued and restored, the 325 is a floating museum now giving us a glimpse of what life was like during the darkest of days.) Might get the word around to all the WWII buffs along with Korea and Vietnam. It was with the Greek navy until its return in 2000. I have been spending time with the ship and some of its crew based out of Evansville, IN. They are going to Chattanooga next week before returning to IN. $10 for adults. Very worthwhile. Located at Ingalls Harbor, Hwy 20 west.

Initially I wasn't sure that I was going to be in town the weekend of the class of '64's 50th Class reunion. But I am and I am going! What better way to spend a weekend than with old friends!! And from looking at the list of those already signed up to attend I saw several names of folks I haven't seen at any of our previous reunions.
Plus two evenings of festivities that includes a "sit down" dinner - at $55.00 that's a bargain these days!
Looking forward to seeing those already signed up and hope to see many others Sept 26 & 27.
