After learning about the Gowanus E-waste from the representative from Lower East Side Ecology Center, ISY participants decided to drop off their electronic waste at the Lower East Side Ecology Center Electronic Waste Recycling Warehouse in Brooklyn. Adding on, the Lower East Side Ecology Center is the largest non-municipal provider of e-waste recycling services in NYC.
The warehouse held many antiques which ranged from old TVs to cameras. Many of the staff members who attended the trip had a sense of nostalgia, after seeing the same electronics they grew up with.
ISY participants got a tour of the warehouse, where they were informed on the steps it took to recycle electronics. The staff at this warehouse had to sort the technology based on many factors like the type of technology, its age, and how broken is was. After sorting, they would package the broken items, and have a partner recycling company pick up the e-waste.
Towards the end of the tour, ISY participants checked out the backroom where the technicians worked. The job of the technicians was to organize the old electronics, so they can then try to fix them. However, if the items couldn't be fixed, they could be made into other items. For example, a broken phone can be made into a new remote. This showed to ISY participants that just because something is broken, it doesn't mean it can't be made into something else more useful.
In the front of the warehouse was a shop that sold refurbished electronics like Xbox's, Nintendo DS', pianos, speakers, and countless games at a very affordable price. Many people throw away their electronics with their normal trash, but ISY participants learned that this habit is very detrimental to the environment. ISY participants plan on bringing more awareness to recycling electronics properly. The main take-away ISY participants got from this trip was the proper way of disposing and recycling old electronics.
