Dumpling making workshop

April 25,2018

ISY participants had the chance to join the Dumpling Making Workshop. To start, there was a presentation on "what exactly are dumplings" and the different cultures that have their own form of the dumpling. For example, the empanada comes from South America and Pierogis come from Poland. Two different cultures, both having their own version of a dumpling.

After, Grace, Simon, and Shuk, demonstrated to ISY participants to how to make the dumplings and explained tips on making dumplings. The available ingredients in the workshop were marinated pork with chives and gyoza wrappers. The participants all learned how to roll their dumplings, but many learned their own special techniques to rolling dumplings. Many participants had their own different designs, but nonetheless they were all dumplings. By the time rolling was done, there were about 4 trays filled with dumplings waiting to be cooked.

To cook the dumplings, they were boiled in hot water for a good amount of time. It took a while to boil all the dumplings because there were so many dumplings. After, the first batch of cooked dumplings came out, participants had the chance to enjoy their creations. The participants loved making the dumplings and enjoyed eating them even more.

By the end of the workshop everyone was full and content. Many participants talked about how fun of a workshop it was and how it was similar to that of the summer roll workshop. Many participants even shared their past experiences of making dumplings at family restaurants or at home. This workshop was definitely a good to show how culture and food brings people together. Especially, since regardless of what culture you come from. Everyone loves the chance to make and eat food!
