Isaiah 64:1-12
God Came Down to Earth
1 Oh, that you would rend the heavens and come down,
that the mountains would tremble before you!
2 As when fire sets twigs ablaze
and causes water to boil,
come down to make your name known to your enemies
and cause the nations to quake before you!
3 For when you did awesome things that we did not expect,
you came down, and the mountains trembled before you.
4 Since ancient times no one has heard,
no ear has perceived,
no eye has seen any God besides you,
who acts on behalf of those who wait for him.
5 You come to the help of those who gladly do right,
who remember your ways.
But when we continued to sin against them,
you were angry.
How then can we be saved?
6 All of us have become like one who is unclean,
and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags;
we all shrivel up like a leaf,
and like the wind our sins sweep us away.
7 No one calls on your name
or strives to lay hold of you;
for you have hidden your face from us
and have given us over to our sins.
8 Yet you, Lord, are our Father.
We are the clay, you are the potter;
we are all the work of your hand.
9 Do not be angry beyond measure, Lord;
do not remember our sins forever.
Oh, look on us, we pray,
for we are all your people.
10 Your sacred cities have become a wasteland;
even Zion is a wasteland, Jerusalem a desolation.
11 Our holy and glorious temple, where our ancestors praised you,
has been burned with fire,
and all that we treasured lies in ruins.
12 After all this, Lord, will you hold yourself back?
Will you keep silent and punish us beyond measure?
I think we often fail to see God...But the Prophet Isaiah did not have this problem, so much...Isaiah was able to see that God might come to earth, and that He might come to earth with a grand entrance, have a grand and humble life, have a grand death, as well as have a grand resurrection from His death...
My Bible has the Old Testament and New Testament Chronologically laid out by when they think each book of the Bible was written...They estimate that Isaiah wrote his Book of Isaiah around 740 to 681 b.c...And my Bible has Jesus being born around five or six a.d...So approximately seven hundred years before Jesus was born, Isaiah would write about God coming to earth...Isaiah writes that God, if only You would rend the heavens and come down to earth, the mountains would tremble before You!...As when fire sets twigs ablaze and causes water to boil, come down to make Your name known to Your enemies and cause the nations to quake before You!...For when You did awesome things that we did not expect, You came down, and the mountains trembled before You...Since ancient times no one has heard, no ear has perceived You, no eye has seen any God besides You, who acts on behalf of those who wait for You...
The Great Prophet Isaiah was close to the LORD...And Isaiah had great insight...The Prophet had the vision to see that one day God would come down to earth, so we could see what He is like...We saw and can read what He would be like, if He were a Man...We would get to hear what He would have to say...Isaiah knew that God is always near us and would write about Him even coming to earth to dwell among us, so that we would not have to make up cleverly devised stories about Him, but that we could be eyewitnesses to His Majesty...And because we could be an eyewitness to Him, others would write the four gospels about the Great One, the Messiah, who did leave the heavens and come down to earth and walk among us...
The One He would send would see mankind sin...He would see us in our forsaken condition...He would forgive many of their sins, as He walked the earth...And He would forgive all of man for our continuing sins as He died on the cross for us...He was not be angry beyond measure...And because of Jesus, as Isaiah wrote, God would not remember our sins forever...Let us look on Him and pray, for we are His children...
