“I cannot forget Carcosa where black stars hang in the heavens; where the shadows of men's thoughts lengthen in the afternoon, when the twin suns sink into the lake of Hali; and my mind will bear forever the memory of the Pallid Mask.”
-Robert W. Chambers, The King in Yellow
A name spoken in hushed tones in the back alleys and dark corners of old bars. To some, a place they searched for all their life, ready to offer up its riches and knowledge. To others, an obsession that consumes the victim and feeds off the dread of dark truths best left unknown. They say it lies just beyond the thin veil that separates the world of reality from this otherworldly and distorted city. Some say it was always there, but knowing it by name is linked to a past older than human time itself.
Beneath Savannah lies another realm, a fractured reality known as Carcosa. This realm exists parallel to the physical world, a liminal space where the boundaries of time and space bend, and the laws of reality falter. While Carcosa has been whispered of in fragmented myths and dark dreams, only the most attuned, or reckless, have glimpsed it.
Carcosa’s Veil is less about secrecy and more about perception. It exists in fragments, half-seen reflections in Savannah’s waters, fleeting visions in fevered dreams, and whispers in forgotten corners of the city.
While the shroud protects the mundane from the supernatural, Carcosa threatens to unravel reality itself. The Strix and Freemasons have shown an unusual interest in Carcosa, with some believing it holds the key to ultimate power or truth. Others, including groups like the Ebon, see Carcosa as a malignant force that must remain hidden at all costs.
Carcosa is not simply a place but a shifting maze of crumbling towers, endless mists, and shadows that whisper forgotten truths. Time doesn’t flow linearly here, and those that have briefly caught a glimpse and have returned report encounters with strange, alien intelligences or even distorted reflections of themselves. The King in Yellow, an enigmatic figure tied to this realm, is rumored to haunt its deepest recesses, tempting and consuming those who stray too far or for too long
Carcosa’s presence beneath Savannah is intrinsically tied to the city’s unique energy. The land’s deep, historical scars, the bloodshed of war, the pain of enslavement, and the relentless pull of ambition act as a beacon, anchoring Carcosa closer to the mortal plane. Some say Carcosa was always there, a reflection of Savannah’s darkest truths, while others believe powerful events forced its proximity:
The Missing Bomb: The detonation of mystical energy could have weakened the barriers between Carcosa and the mortal world.
The Freemasons' Experiments: During the Pax, attempts to "tame" Savannah's energy may have inadvertently opened a crack into this realm.
The Mora and Ferals: Their emergence might hint at something bleeding through from Carcosa into the city above.
Carcosa can be reached only through certain thin places where the veil between realities is weak. These sites are scattered across Savannah, hidden in forgotten crypts, abandoned basements, or drowned riverbeds. It is said that the ghosts of Savannah act as reluctant gatekeepers, their restless energies inadvertently marking locations where the unrest is greatest.

Strix: The Strix have long sought Carcosa’s forbidden knowledge, believing it holds secrets to manipulating blood magic beyond mortal comprehension. This is key to the Strix transforming another to become a Strix through a ritualistic transformation process.
Shifters: The Ferals' descent may be linked to Carcosa’s influence, their madness a byproduct of prolonged exposure to its chaotic energy.
The Temoin see Carcosa as both a source of untapped power and an unspeakable danger, a place where spells take on unpredictable lives of their own.
The Freemasons have tried to map Carcosa’s access points and its influence on the Telluric energies, seeing it as the ultimate puzzle, a gateway to either salvation or destruction for humanity.
During the post-Civil War Pax, a secretive splinter group within the Freemasons delved deeper into Savannah’s energies. While most sought to stabilize the supernatural chaos, they ignored and became fixated on the myth of Carcosa, seeing it as a key to harnessing the ultimate power of the city’s nexus. They conducted secret experiments, blending ritual magic with their understanding of Savannah’s ley lines and potential alliances with the Strix. These experiments were said to involve the Savannah Theater, a site of immense spiritual significance due to its history and its proximity to these energy pathways and were later denied or covered up by the Masons in general since it would have been seen as breaking their code and manifesto. Read more on the History page about the Savannah Theater and the play The King in Yellow.
The Strix, always seekers of forbidden power, have always been obsessed with the myth of Carcosa since it was the genesis of their origins years earlier. To them, it was the ultimate source of mystical energy and knowledge, a place where they could transcend the limitations of vampirism and blood magic. They uncovered fragments of esoteric lore hinting at Carcosa’s existence beneath Savannah, within the labyrinthine network of tunnels that crisscrossed the city. For the Strix, this was no mere curiosity but a path to ascendancy.
