In Savannah, the past clings to the present like sediment. Our reality is stretched thin over centuries of memory. At times, the fragile veil that separates our world from that which lies beyond pulls thin or tears entirely, revealing glimpses of the city’s rich and haunted historic tapestry. Sometimes these glimpses are accidental. More often, they are the consequence of choices, traumas, or rituals that ripple through time.

The modern world lives atop a city steeped in the unrest of its dead. Ghosts are not just lingering memories here; they are residents. While visitors may find this eerie or novel, long-term Savannahians have accepted the presence of the spectral as part of daily life. The living and the dead exist in a sometimes uneasy symbiosis. The ghosts draw energy from the emotions and movements of the living, and in return, they give the city its restless soul.

Savannah’s roots reach deeper than the founding of America, resting on land shaped by generations of Indigenous tribes before colonial footprints ever touched the soil. Its history is a story layered with conflict, mourning, magic, and survival, an inheritance that makes it one of the most spiritually charged and haunted cities in the nation.

Savannah is filled with Melancholy. The city is aged and jaded.  It is said that no city in the United States is old, at least not by European standards.  Many cities are young, crackling with the reckless energy of a child, or have the fiercely defiant spirit of a teenager. Savannah, though, feels well into middle age. It has known war, conquest, pain, and loss many times.

This relatively small metropolis has experienced real decay, then undergone a resurgence, and is in the process of recasting itself to fit the modern era. Yet along the way, so much has ended up lost forever, at least to the unawakened.  For every gloriously restored mansion, some deserted structure stands, a testament to past success and failure.  Ironically, a city once forced to surrender to an army of its countrymen now depends financially on strangers coming regularly to visit. The past, like water, seeps into the very air and simmers in the nearby swamps and dark alleys, slowly creeping throughout the city.
