Humans are the dominant species in the mortal realm, living their lives largely unaware of the supernatural world woven into the fabric of reality. While most remain blind to the truths beyond the Shroud, others have glimpsed what lies beneath, some by choice, others by accident or trauma. They are not just bystanders, they are weavers of stories, carriers of myth, and anchors to reality. The Shroud protects the Unawakened, challenges the Awakened, and empowers the Gifted. Their choices also ripple through the Veil, shaping the balance between realms, and often determining whether the breach remains sealed… or bursts wide open.

Humanity is divided into three broad categories: the Unawakened, the Awakened, and the Gifted. All are fully human, yet their relationship to the supernatural varies dramatically. 

The Unawakened Humans: The majority of humanity. These individuals live entirely unaware of the gifted humans and supernatural world.

• Cannot perceive supernaturals, magic, or breaches in reality.

• Often rationalize or forget supernatural encounters.

• Vulnerable to manipulation or harm when exposed without guidance.

• Serve as the “public” the Shrouded seek to protect or hide from.

The Awakened Humans: Humans who know the truth about the existence of gifted vampires, shifters, witches, and the existence of the realms.

• Often, scholars, hunters, conspiracy theorists, or survivors of supernatural trauma.

• Possess knowledge of the supernatural, Carcosa, and magic

• Do NOT have any supernatural abilities.

• Sometimes recruited into supernatural groups as allies or helpers.

• IMPORTANT: Not all Awakened are allies; some exploit what they know for personal gain.
