1. From the Chromosome Tab, select a Focus Profile.
2. Click on the ? associated with a segment for a known maternal or paternal match. For this example, I am selecting a known Maternal match, and as such, I will replace the default question mark (?) with an M for Maternal and press Enter on the keyboard. I can also assign a group name here by clicking in the space under the Group heading and typing. I will need to enter the Relative Detail section to do anything more.
For this process, we work from the DNA Comparison view for your match, and we disregard the name in the profile selection box (1). Instead, we focus on the Profile person listed for each segment in the DNA Segments box (2) and how that person relates to the relative (3).
For each segment, ask yourself “Which parent does the line of the family tree go through from this segment owner to get to the MRCA for this relative?”
If there is no endogamy or pedigree collapse involved, use the Right Click menu to assign information to more segments and one or more profiles. See DNA Comparison for more information.
Note: watch which segment you have selected on the left (2), especially if you have multiple generations within your profiles. Not all paths will be the same.
Which parent (1) does the line of the family tree go through from segment owner Kathy (2) to get to the MRCA for relative Lindy (3)? In this case, Lindy is Kathy’s Maternal Aunt, so the line passes through Kathy’s Mother - so the segment is marked Maternal.
Note that the active profile (4) is being ignored. It plays no part in this assignment in this location
In this example, the line from the segment owners (1) passes through different sides (2) of the relevant family tree to reach the MRCA for the relative (3). Because of this, some segments are marked with the appropriate M, others are marked with their appropriate P (4). One segment owner (5) has an as yet unknown connection to the relative, and so remains ?.
If the Relative is the descendant of the Profile person, e.g. a child or grandchild, the side is marked as Both.
Note: It is a personal preference as to whether you assign MRCAs and group names or not for B side matches, as these segments will not show on the Segment Maps.
If the Relative is the full sibling of the Profile person, the side is also marked as Both, but if the relative is a half sibling of the profile person, the shared parent is the side that is marked.
Relatives who share only one MRCA can be dealt with a number of ways, the choice is yours.
You can assign the single common ancestor, leaving the other MRCA blank or occupied by an unknown placeholder name such as __ __.
Or, you can move back another generation and assign both of the parents of the known MRCA.
The choice is yours. As is what group name you assign to each and every relative. If you do not fill in a group name, the surnames of the assigned couple are automatically assigned as the group name. LNU is used where no surname exists, or where underscores are used.
A 3/4 relationship, one in which one person had relationships with siblings (either same father and the mother’s were sisters, or same mother and the father’s were brothers), can be recorded in the same way as a full relationships is recorded, assign the segment owner’s ancestors as the common ancestor.
In the example, the match descends from J Cosmo’s 2nd wife, who was the sister of the segment owner’s ancestor H Vitreus.
The initial view here for all matches, will have the side set as ? - even if you have set the side via one of the two previous methods.
You can replace the ? with M, P, MGM, MGF, MGP, PGM, PGF, PGP, or B. This extra ability for side allocation can help to show patterns.
M - Maternal
MGM - Maternal Grand Mother
MGF - Maternal Grand Father
MGP - Maternal Grand Parents
P - Paternal
PGM - Paternal Grand Mother
PGF - Paternal Grand Father
PGP - Paternal Grand Parents
B - Both
You can also use the Right Click menu and chose “Set Side Values”. This will “pull” any P or M values you’ve set elsewhere for those matches, but this will overwrite any previous set side allocations.
You can also use the other options within the Right Click menu to analyze your matches on this screen.
