Brand new, unpopulated Segment Map
See Top and Right Side Sections and Setting a Side from the Relative Detail > DNA Comparison area for more information about setting a side.
If you have been able to set all three of these for one or more matches, after you clicked “Save Segment” and applied to the profile for each, the Segment Map will have been updated with this MRCA, and will now look something like this
The left pane displays a table of DNA data related to the segments on the map. You will need to tick at least Maternal or Paternal, and at least Permanent or Temporary for data to be displayed. All four boxes can be ticked at the same time. No boxes ticked or only one box ticked will result in nothing being displayed on the left hand side.
The data in the table can be sorted by clicking on the related column header.
The drop downs and tick boxes at the top will filter your view.
Chr: a single chromosome can be selected
Paternal: displays Paternal marked segments. These are also displayed in the blue text.
Maternal: displays Maternal marked segments. These are also displayed in reddish-brown text.
Permanent: displays segments that are marked as Permanent. The Group names are shown in bold.
Temporary: displays segments that have not been marked as permanent.
Show All Groups: drop down menu with that profile’s group.
Clicking on the dropdown “All Generations” provides a selection of the generation to be displayed on the Segment Map. This will display all segments that have been assigned to this generation or closer. Up to 20 generations can be filtered, 21 generations or older will only be shown under “All Generations”
The Group List provides the ability to select a group (or groups) to be displayed on the Segment Map. To select multiple groups, hold down the “Ctrl” key and select the groups to see. “Show All” will display all groups.
Delete All Segments: Does as it says and deletes all permanent map segments. Segments may remain as temporary segments
Left Hand Side
There are three possible Right Click menus depending on what state your segment map is currently in, and what you click on.
If you have nothing in your segment map, you will get a single option.
Add Map Segment: Opens pop up to add segment manually
The initial view of a populated Segment Map will contain only Temporary marked Segments.
When clicking on a temporary segment, the right click menu has five options
Add Map Segment: Opens pop up to add segment manually
Edit Map Segment: Opens pop up to add segment manually
Delete Map Segment: Deletes a permanent segment. A temporary segment may be created in it's place.
Mark Map Segments Permanent: Does as it says. Text becomes Bold. Applies only to the group selected when clicking. Only works on Temporary segments
Mark Map Segments Temporary: Does as it says. Text loses the Bold formatting. Applies only to the group selected when clicking. Only works on Permanent segments.
Export Displayed Data to .csv file: does as it says
When clicking on a Permanent marked segment, the right click menu gains the extra option of “Delete Map Segment”. This does as it says, and depending on how the segment was created, a temporary one may still exist in its place.
Note from Becky: Permanent segments are stored in database and confirmed is a way to mark segments that you have confirmed the MRCAs on. When I find common ancestors with a relative, I will enter the MRCAs but do not confirm the segment until I have a triangulation between 3 of us on the same segment.
Right Hand Side
Right clicking on a segment in the map on the right-hand side will produce the following menu
Edit Map Segment: Opens pop up to add segment manually
Show DNA Segments: Opens the Chromosome tab to show the segment selected, along with any other same side marked segments, and unknown segments that overlap.
Delete Map Segment: Deletes the map segment. Only works for Permanent marked segments
