Why orcas keep sinking boats
Scientists have some theories why killer whales have seriously damaged boats about a dozen times this year off the coast of Spain and Portugal.
In the early morning Thursday, killer whales smashed into a sailboat off the southern coast of Spain, puncturing its hull and damaging its rudder. Spanish authorities raced to save the sinking vessel, according to Reuters, but it was in such disrepair it had to be towed ashore.
It wasn’t the first attack by an orca, or killer whale, off the coast of Spain and Portugal this year. And it may not be the last time one chews a rudder or crashes into a hull. Normally, killer whales aren’t considered dangerous to humans. But pods of killer whales have done serious damage to boats in the region about a dozen times already this year, according to the Grupo de Trabajo Orca Atlántica, or GTOA, a research group studying the region’s killer whales, part of a rise in attacks first observed in 2020.
Stories and videos of the attacks widely shared on social media have turned the orca into a meme. After the marine mammals struck some fancy yachts, some observers are calling the strikes concentrated around the Strait of Gibraltar, where the whales congregate in the spring and summer, an act of anti-capitalist solidarity from “orca comrades” and “orca saboteurs.” For others, the series of strikes is eerily similar to a scene in James Cameron’s latest “Avatar” movie, “The Way of the Water.”

This article is important and interesting to me because one of bucket list items is to go whale-watching, specifically to spot Orcas. I feel like as "killer whales" they get a bad reputation, somewhat similar to the stigma sharks have. When I read that they were knocking over boats I thought, "great, now they really have a reason to hate orcas". I wanted to understand the reason these animals were behaving so strangely.

Migración confirma hallazgo de cádaveres de migrantes ahogados en Darién
La directora del Servicio Nacional de Migración, Samira Gozaine señaló que en los últimos días ha habido una reducción en el número de migrantes que han ingresado al país a través de la selva de Darién debido presumiblemente a la crecida de los ríos producto de las recientes lluvias.
Según estadísticas de la institución, el día de ayer 790 personas ingresaron al país por medio de la trocha del Darién. No obstante, las autoridades creen que este número de migrantes se vio reducido por las condiciones climatológicas que han provocado la crecida del río Chucunaque Tuira y de otros afluentes que podrían haber menguado la intención de estos migrantes de continuar su trayecto a través de la selva por el nivel de peligrosidad.
Gozaine indicó que, en los últimos días, unidades de Migración en conjunto con el Servicio Nacional de Fronteras y el Senan han rescatado diez cadáveres de personas que se ahogaron tratando de atravesar la peligrosa e inhóspita selva que en estos momentos representa un peligro mayor debido a lo caudaloso de los ríos.

Para mí el tema de los migrantes en Darién es de suma importancia porque se cataloga como crisis migratoria. Las personas pierden la vida a diario tratando de cruzar esa selva, muchos con niños, simplemente tratando de llegar a una "tierra prometida". El país no está haciendo lo suficiente para dar cara a esta crisis.
