In this section of my research i am going to be looking into country music and different aspects of this genre and how it has changed over time. Im also going to focus mainly on my instruments aspect for example vocal techniques in this genre and were they originally came from. Im also going to use different forms of research for example articles and videos to get my information for this research and i'm also going to compare different genres.
country music originated in Eastern Tennessee with folk music from locals being mixed with music from working class emigrants from Africa and also Europeans and its made up of a mixture of cultural music and religion bringing them together. These styles of music can still be seen in country music to this day which is crazy as they came from artists before people like Jonny Cash and Dolly Parton. Thanks to the Ole Opry Radio show in Nashville thy were able to bring about the country music revolution i the 20 years of the great depression. This is why Nashville is now seen as the biggest city for country music as so many artists started coming out of Nashville thanks to the radio station. Thanks to how popular radio was in the 1920 helped make country music popular as there weren't many other ways to find new music without buying recordings which wasn't cheap to people at the time so the main way in listening to popular music at the time and still is to this day. It helped the genre become popular nation wide and not just rural areas like Nashville and Tennessee. Thanks to peoples emotions in the Great Depression many artists started writing about it and country music became consciousness for a lot of people in America as the genre is very easy to show your emotions especially in the lyrics. Not only thanks to music but film had a key role in how country music came about. For example Holly wood started making western movies about cowboys and used "singing cowboys" as a example and this helped make the image for country music which has followed on to the modern day. The film industry started using country music styles in the 1930's and 1940's at the same time it was becoming popular on the radio and the both together made it gain popularity so quickly. there are many artists which people say sculpted the country music genre we have today. Most of which coming out of Nashville which is seen as the capital of country. For example creating some of the best artist like: Garth Brooks, willie nelson and Chris Stapleton all of which playing country music differently effecting how people make country music now in this day and age. More information on the top country artists can be found on the website bellow allowing you to find more artists. https://mdlbeast.com/xp-feed/music-industry/top-10-best-country-music-artists-of-all-time
Chris Stapleton is most know for his songs Tennessee whiskey, traveller and broken halos but he has also made so many more amazing tracks throughout his whole career. Before Chris Stapleton country music was very similar and followed the same still and began to be repetitive and its repretation was going down. For example the country music after the 90s had stayed the same although when Chris Stapleton began to be realised and people realised not only was his instrumental aspect different but especially his voice was incredibly different but still had the similar country twang to his voice. You notice that he has a very soulful voice. People say he's so amazing because of his raw talent "gritty vocals and genuine " . Chris Stapleton was able to change the style of country for the better and very few country fans dislike his music as it is so heartfelt and every song can effect you emotions in a different way. More information on Chris Stapletons back ground can be found on this website.

Garth brooks is a artist of country music that when the fought of country music comes out people usually think of garth because he has that classic country style of music. Hes most know for his songs like I got friends in low places. His music uses all the usually country style instruments for example a lot of his music has a steel pedal which is usually only used in iver country or similar styled genres. garth brook was mot famous or became a hit in the late 80s and 90s which is fought to be one of the greatest eras of country music. He hit the ground running wth the fact his firs hit got to number 2 on top country. Garth has 19 number 1 hits on hot country songs one of the most popular country music listening spots. Also nine of his albums have achieved diamond status in the states which is the most from any artist ever in the history of music as a whole proving he is a key musican for country as a whole.
i walked a line by Johny cash is believed to be a iconic country song for many different reasons. One being it was Johnny cashs first number one hit in his history and as Johnny cash is a iconic musican it means listeners enjoy it a little bit more because of this. Another thing is they are still popular t this day even though the fact they are extremely old and in some peoples eyes out dated. Another thing is that its seen as one of the most recognisable country songs ever. it is also the best selling song in country history. for more information tae a look at this link.https://hankfm.com/playlist/the-top-ten-selling-country-songs-of-all-time/#:~:text=1.,the%20Line”%20by%20Johnny%20Cash. The most played country song from the last 50 years is Live like you were dying by Tim McGraw Even though this isn't the most iconic it is the most played the reason for this being is the song as so much meaning behind it especially the lyrics and it has a catch chorus on top of this. The song does have a amazing feel when listening to it and can put the audience through a large variety of emotions.
Country music has a few different sub genres that are very different from each other. Most of them are genres with a country twist for example: Country rap and country pop. Howether others are also linked to the genre that arnt murged for example folk music sub genres and also people believe that rock n roll is linked.
Country rap originated in 1986 in new York, it came from a rap group called bellamy rap. They were very much involved in the hip hop background then made a song with country styles and it made country rap. To this day country rap has been on the raise in the last five years as country music has grown popular and people have started putting there own swing on it to become famous and grow there target audience. In the video above it talks about how mainstream country music slowly gained popularity from rappers and the genre of hip hop. In the video he explains that both genres even though sound completely different are actually quite similar. For example in the 90s they were singing about there foughts on the same things however due to the different conditions they become different. For example its all about there up bringing and how they don't come from money and deal with struggles.
In the video the talks about how it brings different races together making each other equal as the truth is nearly all hip Hop artists were Black and nearly all country artists were white. Were as thanks to this sub genre that isn't the case in fact most artists in the top ten country and mainstream aren't just white and its normal as it should be. He also spoke about the fact that a lot of huge Hip Hop names have started making country music just for the reason its popular at the moment and they know they will be able to make a lot of money as its a marketing sceme. For example some artists like: Post Malone, Beyonce, lil Pump and so on. As i talked about how country music has gained a following from artists like Chris Stapleton, Zac Bryan and Morgan Wallen, these people have caused country music to grow drastically from 2018 to modern day.
Before country rock came about country started to be taken into the more coastal areas like california by artists like the Beatles. A lot of popular bands at the time did covers of country music and that was the way country music slowly became popular. A version of this is Beatles covering Buck Owens song Act NaturallyCountry rock really originated in California, in he 60s and 70s mainly coming from folk bands who wanted to change there style to become popular in the music scene as country rock had started becoming popular o the FM radio. The country rock scene was mainly in Los Angeles however the change the genre making it there own. From the 60s to the modern day country rock is extremely popular, thanks to its similarity to country music that is so I would say its as popular country in some sense for like manstream and what you hear on the radio in the modern day. Thanks to country rock we know have bands like Credence clear water rival and Lynyrd Skynyrd and even the Eagles so its in my eyes the best sub genre that came from country out of all of them. There are a few distinked themes in the lyrics that are used in nearly every song in country music. A lot of country songs are telling a story, most of the time its about love. Its usually very romantic or a lot about heartbreaks. People that i know have said its "a lot about people crying over people they lost." Its about hard work and rural life for example they tend to be very straight forward and relatable. Most songs in country music a about multiple topics, these being belief for example: christianity, love and heart break, alchohol and person pride. These are some of the most common topics. These different topics are all slightly connected to why they are used so commonly in the genre of music this being the genre is very much Influenced by americans and that this music shows of a lot of the countrys culture in some states like Tennessee them more rural areas. Even though it seems quite sexist but most country songs wrote by male artists are about losing a girl or chasing a girl and will usually about something to do with a female. https://www.startlemusic.com/blog/music-genres-explained-country#:~:text=Lyrics%3A%20The%20lyrics%20often%20tell,to%20be%20straightforward%20and%20relatable. The style of talking about trucks dirt roads and beer is the era of Bro country in the 2010 s a good example is cruise the song talking about his chevy and a girl hes trying to pick up. These phrases were being used by people who hated the music and even fans of the genre. The most common phrase i spoke about before a little bit is actually Hey Girl. A reason many people dislike this is even though its most of the time not used in a bad way people think its quite sexist or even Misogynistic. What a lot of people noticed especially in 2013 was all the lyrics in country songs sounded exactly the same which meant most people lost interested in country music. What would happen in nearly every song and is the most come lyric is Yeah nearly every song will have the word yeah about 10 times. Bellow is a youtube video explaining common words.
Coutry music has grown massivelly in listerners ad streams and has started creeping slowly into the charts of different genres like pop culture. For example streams have grown 24 % yer by year. To show how much it has grown in the past six years country musics streams have increased by 287% which is astonishing. In this year 2023 36& of streamed songs were in the top 50 and in 2016 it was only 2%. Its not only streams but also vynl had a rise in sales from 2019 to 2022, there was a increase from 6.6% to 27% In them few years 1.92 million units of country vynls were sold which is very impressive for a growing genre to be seeling that many vynls which in some peoples yes are out dated. Country music isnt only becoming popular in the us as country music in the UK has grown even more streams from 2020 to 2022 rose 50% which is extortionate. The reason so many new artists have been found and country music is becoming popular in places no were near its origin, this is thanks to social media especialy: Facebook, instergram and especially tictoc. As i said earlier with subgenres many people have started listening to country as rappers and pop artiss started saying they liked the music or they started making it to probably make more money. Another way country artists and the music has been able to become so popular is live performances like gigs and festivals. For example the C2C festival in the UK had over 20,000 fans show up to the event all wanting to listen to country music in march 2023 so that shows the amounnt of follows also artists like Morgan Wallen and Luke Combs very modern country artists having great sucess in the uk with every event they have done being sold out.

Soul music is a genre of music which originated to pop music at the time being changed by Black american pioneers. Soul music came around in 1950s so mid twentyth century. Some genres in which soul has aspects of are: blues, mototown, smooth Jazz and gospel music. A key person who pioneered this is is ray charles with the fact he started to mix blues with gospel music to make his own kind of music which has developed to know be know as soul music. Soul music on actually started become popular and able to get better in the 60s due to record labels like motown and atlantic actually finally agreed to treat black musicans proffesionally and also equal. The music was a key aspect of the civil rights act going on in the states. And thats why it became popular as it was in a way protest music for example Sam cookes music was believed to be alot like this. The genre is the reason we also have alot of modern music to this day for example: Hip hop, disco and electrical music. For more information copy this link. https://www.masterclass.com/articles/soul-music-guide#.
Ray charles is seen as one of the top pioneers to bring about soul music with his song writing. As i said earlier he brought together blues country music and gospel and then also took the big arrangement of bands for jazz and used that for his music. He mainly did this through the rhythm of these genres for example soft swung drum beat with spontaneous sudden gospel vocals. This made the music become sophisticated and like i said spontaneous. After hearing his story Rays back ground is also extremely interesting, he was able to come out of poverty however los his vision and became blind at a young age about seven years old to be exact and the only way he could show his strength and lift him self up is creating and performing music. He latter on went more into R and b music however hes is still a key pioneer of soul. For more information look at the link https://www.polarmusicprize.org/laureates/ray-charles/#:~:text=Ray%20Charles%20was%20a%20pioneer,was%20both%20sophisticated%20and%20spontaneous.
In this video its all about how successful ray was and how hard he had worked at such a young age for example when he was 16.
There are a large amount of sub genres for soul music howether some have become extremely popular. Some of these genres being fun music which made artsts like james brown go from soul to funk because it was were music went originally after soul. A artist who thrived within funk mus ws steve wonder. Another one being soul jazz played by people like gregory porter who have taken the clasic soul vocals and thenn used jazz bass and piano along side it especially using a swung drum beat. Another one i was able to find was Hip hop soul which is a mixture of r and b with soul using hip hop beats and aspects of rap. The first one im going to look into is funk. Im going to start by looking into Jame brown as i know he actually changed his music style half way through his career. Im aslo gonna look at how a sub genre became so popular and made its own era of music. I also saw that a artist in america has made his own genre called dive bar soul which is rock n roll with a soul vocals alot of sub genres have the vocal aspects.
Some key lyrical aspect in soul music are extremey similar to the sub genre gospel for example a key aspect of vocals are harmonies. Harmonies in soul music are usually rich and complex because they show of thee passion through they strength in the vocals. How they show f harmonies is they blend multiple voices to create the harmone howether they put there voices together to make a richer and greatr sound. What vocalists do is they make the melodies complex to show of there skis but to also add the twists in the vocaal side of the song to keep the listener engaged, to portray this even more they also use call and responc for a few different reasons. One being they use it to build a part od the song for example the vocals gai n in dynamics and both singers are fighting to shw of there part getting louder or higher. Another one is it alows lo of pasion t be played through the music when you use this technique. It also adds another layer to the music and also can add more texture to the song. The yrics i soul music have the most meanig as the other aspects like drums guitar come ffrom other genres were as soul music vocals are very much just soul and uniue and this is due to the fact they are so meaningful and alot of the songs are about love or in a way heart break and struggles of every day life and thats why peple are able to relate to the music so much as at the time and to this day people go through these feelings and emotions every day no matter who you are so thy are able to relate to the music and channel there emotions with the music. Alot of it is about civil rights as at the time there was alot going on with black peole and culture being attacked and after alot of events like asassinations people started standing up and thats why songs like a change is gonna come was so well listened to around the world as it was used as a peace treaty song in a way. For example he reffrances in the song about traveling nd trying to find his place but he means about euality nd jst want to be somewhere were everyone is eua which has such meaning towards it when you go through his lyrics in his songs. More information can be found in the site or in the picture.

There are two different aspects or kind of performers in soul music and it depends on the kind of song you are playing for example if its very soft the passion is more in the voice were as if its in a up beat song the band and vocalist will run around the stage and be extremely passionate. The way i can explain it is like a gospel church were everyone is running around showing god there love for him through the music and screaming and the music is mainly based on passion for what you love. Another thing is as a lot of the music is raspy and very rough vocals alot of the music is not sang through your throat its more from the belly and stomach the best example of this is if you watch the video below and you focus on his stomach before he sings he completely inhales through his stomach making him sing from there otherwise yo might damage your vocals. And as you notice the song isnt a complete soul song but the vocals use soul aspects the song is rain by the teskey brothers.
Soul music peaked in the 1960's being the most popular music in big country like America however sadly it stopped evolving and growing in 1980's. A huge characteristic for this was the huge change from soul to R & B, nearly all artists were moving on to this genre as it was the next up and coming genre of the time and to get popularity you have to play whats popular. The reason R&B became more popular is it uses More electric sounds and different production techniques. After this large record company's obviously looking for money in the industry moved to what is popular and that was the finishing turning point for the end of the growing genre. However artists to this day still play soul music and are extremely popular for example Gregory porter however its usually a mixture of Soul and Jazz. The genre especially in the UK still to this day changes and helps make new genres showing how much of a impact it had on the music Industry world wide. Reggae originated from small Caribbean islands in the 1940's to 1950's and from there grew to a global status. It started grown fro Jamaica from the social and political upheaval in the post war. The genre is historically very tied to the country Jamaica History as a whole. The genre has a similar story to calypso which originated in trinidad, that sound of mento has been around since the convergent society of Jamaica as a whole. The way different cultured started to mix from Spain mainly in the 1500 and then Britain in 1655. After these countrys wining the wars the would in slave the people of the islands and transport them to work on sugar plantations. As bad as this was it aloud different cultures mix to make the classic Jamaican sound we have to day and is so distanced to the country. Mixing the culture of Jamaica and mixing it with European music made this sound, most songs are made about enslavement, the average instrumentation used in this kind of music was: Guitar, Rumnba box, Bongo and Banjo. Mento mixed this with a satirical vibe in the lyrics mixed with the meaning of everyday life. Another thing they would do is repeat the verses foundation and after all this Reggae music blossomed into the music industry. More information can be found in these links.

His music was that impactful it even effected politics for example he would use his music to promote peace and talk about injustice that was happening in and agains his country Jamaica. This can mainly be seen in ther One love concerty he put on in 1978 which was a event were you can see first hand bob Marley is trying to use his platform to promote his beliefs. Thanks to Croxone's Production skills it aloud Jamaica to knoiw about his system sound operating and his ammazing work being the founder of studio one. He was most know for helping astablish different recording techniques. It was these techniques that define the classic Reggae sound we know today. In 1963 he created studio one in Brentford road Kingston. This was the first ever studio in Jamaica that was owned by a coloured man. This became a inovating training ground for up coming artists in that generation. He was also one of the people that founded Bob Marley and his band who is now seen as the most popular and greatest reggae artist you've ever seen.

Dub music originated from reggae music however the instrumental aspect instead of the vocals, these mainly being B - sides of 45 RPM records. These instrumental pieces were called iver Versions or dubs explaining the name of this genre. Thes peices aloud producers and sound system operators to experiment with a already made genre and make it there own. A key thing dub music was know for was having heavy amounts of audio effects. Most of these being: Reverb, Echo, Delay and bandpass filtering. This genre originated in the 1960's to 1970's and the history of the genre was extremely intresting as it came about by complete acident and they decided to go along with it and the music exploded. In 1968 to be exact a sound system producer called Rudolph Redwood who most people knew him by his nicname "Ruddy". He was pressing a recording of the new single "On the beach" by the Paragon, the sound engeneer with them at the time made a huge mistake that lead to a suprising miricale. He acidently pressed a copy of the track without the vocals however the people in the studio liked it and kept it as it was for a sound systtem partie and the response from the audiance/listeners was amazing and electric. They loved the instrumental version and it shortly after became a hit, this hole concept made the music so much easier to be experimental and open. New techniques like toasting which is when people chant or rap and comunicate with the audiance while the song is playing, this technique is used by nearly every DJ to this day not only in Dub music.

There are three main topics when it comes to lyrical themes in reggae music. These being: Social justice and Political commentary and finally unity love and redemtion. These are the hree topics im going to research into and look at how they make up most lyrics in reggae music.
Alot of reggae music adresses alot of problems in the social aspect of places at that time for example Racism and how most people righting the songs had to deal with this first hand especially in the earlier life in reggae not so much in the modern day hopefully. As there country isnt the richest they would also talk about poverty and how it needs to be changed and the struggles of life. What this does is not only give the listener a good time listening to the music but people also learn the lyrics and will take in the information and learn more about different cultures. Easpecially places like england and the US who are seen as over all wealthy countrys compared to Places lime Jamaica. Linking back to the racism aspect they also add on to that by talking alot about inequality and i believe this branches of ftom the racism aspect of the times. Some example to show this is the case are Redemtion song and get up stand up by bob marley both song being about talking about your beliefs and attacking problems they had to face just for being a different race or not having acess to the same amount of money. Not only Bob marley but also artists like Peter tosh and Jimmy Cliff also did this showing its not just one artist but a group trying to get the samew point across to listeners.
When it comes to lyrics instead of it being about loving one person but about equality and everyone loving eachother and making everyone feeling equal and nice. Its mainly trying to show of the aspects of peace and that feeling of safety with others and being able to trust people as ive said before artist like Bob marley used this aspect extremely well with the aspect of everyone being equal ad you should love yourself and others. The whole aspect of redemtion is not only used in lyrics but even in different parts like titles of songs which show of how important it was the best example is the song redemtion song by bob marley.
Thanks to Reggae music the jamaican economy grew mainly from tourist attraction as more people were able to find out about the country through music and people. Alot of peoples understand more about the country and thanks to this it means that especially the carabiean islands are able to be one of the biggest tourist atractions for holiday in the world. This lead to the country gaining more money for the people as there were more jobs going around the country for all inclusive resorts and restraunts as more people started to bring more money to the country on holiday. Not only helped big busnessess but also helped local businesess that were probably struggling selling tours and rural clothing to that specific place. Events supporting Reggae music also make loads of money for local business and the local economy. The best example being Reggae Sumfest estimating to raise over 20 million us dollars anually and helps out massively with hotels streat shops and more. The genre has impacted the music idustry as well and changed so many genres some being: Rock, hip hop, pop and even elec tric music. Some artiust that have really taken reggae eliments and put them in there own music would have to be: the police, eric clapton and no doubt all of which having extremely sucessful careers and very well known world wide. Its even had a huge impact on political matters aswell.

The beginning of Jazz music started in the 19th century, a key place of the origin of Jazz music is New Orleans home to Congo Square. This is a place were most slaves in the area would go and play music together and this tradition started in the 1820's and this would bring together a array of people from different countries and all over the world. This aloud lots of different nations and music mixing. Lots of people believe that music originated with jazz in west affrica coming from the Rhythm an blues feel to the music. This music mixed with Europes Harmonic chords and varied instruments and theres even A aspect of caribiean rhythms. A man named Buddy Bolden is one of the first musicans to play jazz music and was a band leader and an African American artist. People saw Buddy as a person who spread the awareness of the genre.

Widely considered one of the most influential figures in jazz history, Armstrong revolutionised the genre through his virtuosic trumpet playing, charismatic stage presence, and innovative improvisations. His recordings from the 1920s and 1930s helped define the sound of jazz during that era.
rn in 1971 in Los Angeles, California, Porter grew up in Bakersfield, where his mother, a minister, introduced him to gospel music and the recordings of Nat King Cole. This early exposure laid the foundation for his musical style, which reflects a deep connection to both gospel traditions and jazz sensibilitiesPorter's initial career path was in athletics; he attended San Diego State University on a football scholarship. However, a shoulder injury shifted his focus towards music. He began performing in small jazz clubs while studying at university, eventually moving to New York City to pursue a full-time music career
This style emerged in the 1920s and early 1930s being know as a distinctive style of jazz music. The genre originated in the united states and spread from there. The music came from dance music ensemble mixing with rhythmic pioneers of Jazz culture, some being louis armstrong and even benny carter. Swing developed as a group of genres that are broader jazz synthesis blending different styles of music like: Ragtime, Black Spiritual, Blues and european music. The way swing is different to Jazz is it has a very strong propulsive rhythm which people explain as a Bouncy style. This became crucial when it came to spotting the genre and even became central to its appeal. Instead of most Jazz music at the time this genre had Huge bands unlike dixieland and bands like that at the time. Most bands had between 12 to 16 musicians in the band allowing the sound to be so full making it different to most music being played at the time. Again a difference being the music was usually read of a score and unlike jazz a lot less improvisation was used in the pieces and more like a orchestra

The genre came about in London clubs in the 80's were DJ's would take classic jazz elements and mix them with hip hop making a enjoyable sound for the audience and something know one else had heard before o blew up and is till popular to this day. This genre was played by many big djs at the time for example: Gilles Peterson and Eddie Piller

The most come thing Jazz music is relationships but mainly that idea merging with emotions as a lot of Jazz music is improvised and will sound completely different depending on how the player feels for example is its a pianist and hes sad hes going to very likely use minor chords instead of major chords and will probably be quite moving and sot were as if the musician is extremely happy its probably going to be up beat and extremely powerful. With relationships a lot of Jazz artists will take there feelings and instead of talking a lot them portray it in a improvised peace and this is why the music is so real and not the same each time as know matter what the emotions are its going to be really meaningful. Me can be found in the link.
