My plan to progress in the music industry and i have two plans to achieve this depending on education i want to persue. The first career i'm going to look into is carrying on with my band along side a full time job and then try to do more private gigs and or weddings.
The other plan is to go to university sand meet a lot of other musicans and network with people possibly making some original music and or covers and go touring. This will be a possibility if im able to do a commercial music course which in the last year you do a tour or work experience anywhere in the uk.
A session musician is someone who helps Iver record perform a piece of music that is not theirs, but the artist has composed it but needs someone to record it with enough talent. A session musician needs to be extremely create with their instrument and a fat learner, the reason being is they might have to make a piece for someone who needs it to be recorded the next day and you have to be able on the spot change your piece to what the artists want. I would like to be a session singer for a studio as it means you make amazing connections for the future, and it is one of the highest paying jobs aside from being a famous artist. A good example would be John Mayer who started off as a session musician who featured on loads of huge songs and got his name out there and then produced his own music and is now one of the most famous guitarist and camos on many songs and everyone wants him to help them in the studios. An effective way to get into this industry is to start out trying to feature on local tracks for free to get your name out there and build up a slight portfolio. I would then contact a studio for work or work experience and show them my portfolio, and sometimes studios give you a job and ring you up with work and you go from there.
Income: A session musician with 1-3 years of experience will make around 44,000 pounds per year although if you have over 8 years you are classified as a senior session musician and can make over 76,000 pounds per year however it entirely rely on your ability in your instrument and if you get a contract overwise you can't control when you get work which can be unreliable.
Qualifications needed: To Techniqu ally become a session musician you do t need qualifications however there are many skills that would make becoming a session musician a lot easier. One of which is sightseeing, this is an effective way to show studios and artists a good understanding of music and that you can learn something fast. For example, you hand a score, and you play it which die to short amount of time if you can save time learning the song of someone and this way people will want to work with you. Another one would be grading in your instrument. If your CV says you are graded in your instrument, especially 7 plus grading people will want to work with you more. Another thing is education in music. For example, someone who has an A level / degree in music shows you are dedicated to music, and you are in a way a professional, however it is not necessary as a lot of amazing musicians did not do it at college or uni.
To progress as a member of a band we would have to get into the wedding scene as it would be the only way to make a living in the industry, the best way to achieve this goal is by doing as many gigs as possible in the local scene to get you there. We were able to do this and got our first two wedding offers in the last month. Are only problem is we don't have enough songs as a group to vary are set so we have noticed that people that see us often get board of the setlist, We have decided to try to get 3 new songs every week, this allows us to have multiple set opportunity's after about 2-3 months of doing this. It also means we can show people multiple sets and give them options. This also means if they offer us more money, we will play for an extra hour and have the material.
Income: Being a performer the money can be completely varied, for example an original band will make near to no money at the start of their career and if they do not become famous that will not really change. However, if you play cover music, you can perform at more venues like pubs and have a higher chance to make a career, especially if you are doing weddings, which depending on your ability you can charge 1,000-5,000 pounds each time. A band I know called conscious club does weddings. They charge 4,500 pounds for each performance and in most months do more gigs than days in a month, meaning they can do it full-time.
Qualification needed: To be in a band you don't need any education technique however from my own experiences I would recommend it as a know some people that are musicians that didn't do it for A levels or college and I have learnt so much over the last two years and they have improved very slowly and struggled a lot more. A key reason is you are being taught by musicians that have worked in the industry for example my teacher is in a originals band that are very popular in the music industry. The equipment is also a key aspect as your are able to use things like studios in which people I know wouldn't even know how to use any of the equipment and also haven't even seen a studio. I also have improved on my instrument. I have also met loads of connections like my band how I am still in and people I know Arnt even in a band. It helps to be a better performer if you take it on to further education.
I would like to be a teacher at a later time in my life after uni possibly as I can do a post grad or become a teacher up to college however can only teach the first year of uni. However, I would want to be a private teacher although if I only wanted to do this, I do not need to get a postgraduate but would have to learn some more. I would like to research into it as it can be an effective way to make money on the side of a job or working in the industry. I spoke to my singing teacher about this, and he is going to teach me some tricks to help me get a head start. Hes going to teach me warmups to show possible up and coming students. I am also thinking of doing a bit of work experience in a school, so I know what it is like tutoring kids.
Income: Being a teacher varies in salary depending on the level of education you teach. For example, the pay for primary school teachers is not high for example around minimum wage due to the fact your jobs Arnt to hard as you are teaching basics and working with kids. However, the pay for high school teachers is larger at around 30,000, although you must work with teenagers, which can be seen as extremely harder to work with. And you get played the most to teach college and university's because the people you are teaching want to do this subject for a living were as high school students and primary school students do not know what they want to do with their life.
Qualification needed: The amount of education you need depends on how high the education is you want to teach. This also is the reason the higher level of education you teach the Beter the salary. To become a teacher, you do need a teacher's degree at university. However, you can do different degrees to cater to the kind of school you are trying to teach. There are two diverse ways to be a music teacher in primary school, the first one being just getting a degree in music and specializing in that lesson. Although the way a lot of teachers learn is to do an overall education degree and then specialize in music. To become a secondary school teacher, you need a degree in music. However, you do not need to do a master's you only need a BMus course although it is recommended to do a BA honors course into something to do with education. Some universities that are good for this would be Bath spa or Liverpool hope. To teach at a college or university level you need to have a doctorate diploma which is the highest kind of education you can get and the hardest, however you will have a job as university's always need lectors. You would have to specialize in a subject like performance or theory.
In this task i havew looked at many different progression routes i could go down and it seems the more amount of education you go into the better pay the jobs you get out of it and after seing this i definetly want to go to university and progress that way.
